CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry says that if he's elected president, he will work to make Washington as "inconsequential" to Americans' lives as possible.

Perry jumped into the Republican race on Saturday and outlined his principles in a speech at a conservative conference in Charleston, S.C.

Perry says America isn't broken but the government in the nation's capital is. He says he wants to cut taxes and free businesses from the shackles of regulation to spark an economic recovery.

The governor is blaming President Barack Obama for "rudderless" leadership.
