(AP) -- South Carolina's state Senate has given approval to a bill establishing a new 7th congressional district in  the Lowcountry.

Wednesday's 25-15 vote came after GOP Senate leaders argued against approving a plan that varied greatly from a House version of the bill.

They lost out to Republicans and Democrats who wanted the district in the southern part of the state.

House and Senate negotiators will try to work out a compromise in the next few weeks. House Speaker Bobby Harrell said he planned to bring the House back into session on July 26 to vote on that deal.

Senate GOP leaders pushed a proposal to put the new district in the northeastern corner of the state. That was similar to the House's approach.
