For Little River's Bridgette Solis, the carjacked GMC truck that crashed into the Waccamaw River Wednesday may have landed on the other side of the bank, but the action came much closer to her than she would have liked.
"My son and I were fishing underneath the cliff, and the truck literally flew over our heads," says Solis. "I was so frightened at first because I thought it was going to crash on top of us."
Horry County police released more details Thursday about the North Carolina man they say carjacked two drivers, caused two crashes, and tried to jump a river in the car. Police say around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, a caller in North Myrtle Beach reported a driver who might have a gun involved in a carjacking.
Police say that Gregory Allen Spry, 44, had originally carjacked a driver in a gray Volvo at gunpoint after colliding with the vehicle he was driving. They say he then collided with a white GMC truck on Star Bluff near the IGA on Highway 90 and carjacked another driver. Spry then sped out of sight down Star Bluff.
At the end of Star Bluff is the Waccamaw River where at least three days a week, Solis takes her 5-year-old son Andrew to fish.
"I don't think my son thought it was real. All he could say was 'truck boom'."
"Dukes of Hazzard had nothing on this," said Wampee Community resident A.D. Watts.
While he was sitting on his dock, the stolen truck sped passed the end of Star Bluff Road through his driveway, ramped off the cliff and crashed into the Waccamaw River.
"I never thought a car would be able to do that, but now I know a GMC truck will go as far as you want it to."
Watts says he thinks the truck went through the air 250 feet before crashing.
"It had to be going at least 100 miles per hour or more."
During its brief flight, the truck flipped on its side and landed on its top with Spry stuck underwater.
Watts dove into the river to save who he thought was his friend because he recognized the truck.
"Once I drug him out of the car, I knew something was wrong because it wasn't my friend. All the guy kept telling me was to help him get away."
Solis says she overhead the man saying he wasn't trying to jump the river.
"He said he didn't know the road ended," says Solis. Thursday, Solis pointed to the new sign at the end of Star Bluff that says Road Ends.
"It was a day I'll never forget, but I would rather it not have happened at all to tell you the truth," says Solis. "I gave my fishing poles away already."
Police say he was severely injured and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Once released, Spry will be taken to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
Charges are pending.
