MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Emergency workers were called to 1706 North Ocean Boulevard, in front of Palmetto Shores, for a near drowning about 12:45 Friday afternoon.
Two lifeguards jumped in to save a woman in her late teens or early 20's who got caught in a rip current. When they got to her, she wasn't breathing. As they pulled her to shore, they say they tried a maneuver to get the water out of her and get her breathing.
When she still wasn't breathing by the time they got to shore, they started CPR.
After about 15 seconds, they say she coughed up water and started breathing.
She was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment.
A rip current is a channel of water that heads away from the beach and it can carry swimmers out with it. To get out of a rip current, experts say, don't panic, and swim parallel to the shore.
