More than 100 people welcomed home Marine Lance Corporal Corey Szucs in Surfside Beach Wednesday night. Szucs is returning from combat in Afghanistan, where he lost his leg.

The Marine has been at Walter Reed Hospital since last September and will not be released until later this fall. Although he was offered a medical discharge, he turned it down.

The welcome home was organized in part by the Blue Star Mothers. County Councilman Paul Price, a retired U.S. Marine, attended the event, and presented Corporal Szucs with flags that have flown over the Horry County, state, and federal government buildings.

Szucs is also celebrating his 21st birthday while at home on leave.
