Walmart officials will build a small supercenter in Marlboro County

The company's South Carolina public affairs officer, Glen Wilkins, says they've submitted plans to Bennettsville city officials but haven't released a specific location.

Wilkins says the store will be about 90,000 square feet, which is about half the size of a regular supercenter. He says the store will include a pharmacy, grocery and general merchandise department.

In 2006, Walmart expressed interest in opening a mid-size store on a 29 acre site off of Cheraw street. Officials told us then they decided to hold-off on plans because of the economy.

Wilkins says they plan to start hiring at the beginning of next year and will set up a location in Bennettsville to take applications. He didn't say how many jobs will be offered.

The store will open in mid-2012.

The upcoming Bennettsville store is a part of Walmart's plans to bring 4,000 new jobs and invest $400 million in South Carolina over the next five years.

The company made the announcement last week.

The move means at least a dozen new stores, relocations and expansions for other existing Wal-Mart stores across the state, including Lake Cityin Florence County . The company says there are no plans to expand its distribution center near Greenville.

Walmart's decision brings its total number of jobs in South Carolina to approximately 32,000.

Do you think Walmart is good for the South Carolina economy?
