(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has picked the former commanding general of Fort Jackson to lead the state's unemployment agency.
Haley announced Thursday that she wants Maj. Gen. Abe Turner to be the next executive director of the state Department of Employment and Workforce.
Turner is chief of staff of the United States Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb. Because he is an active duty officer, he made no comments.
Turner was commanding officer at Fort Jackson from 2004 to 2005. The 56-year-old will take the helm of the state's jobless benefits agency Sept. 1.
He will replace retired Air Force Brig. Gen. John Finan as executive director.
Turner is the second minority Haley has appointed to her Cabinet. The Senate must confirm her pick.
