Horry County school board members are meeting with key staff the last week of April and the first week of May to discuss a growing problem of overcrowding in schools.
Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Elsberry says about 15 percent of the schools in the district will be overcrowded when they open next school year.
Elsberry, along with Director of Planning Joe Burch, met with several members of the Horry County School board Wednesday afternoon. They will meet with the remaining members May 2 and 3 at the district offices. Both meetings are open to the public. Their goal: figure out how to stop nine schools from overcrowding even more than they already are, and balance out enrollment by the 2012-2013 school year.
There are nine schools in the district that are currently filled over capacity with their students. They are:
- North Myrtle Beach Primary School at 100% occupancy
- Midland Elementary School at 103% occupancy
- Myrtle Beach Primary School at 103% occupancy
- Seaside Elementary School at 104% occupancy
- Aynor Elementary School at 107% occupancy
- Conway Elementary School at 112% occupancy
- Saint James Elementary School at 116% occupancy
- Loris Elementary School at 121% occupancy
- Ocean Bay Elementary School at 125% occupancy
