It's a problem hitting everywhere on the East Coast, and especially on the Grand Strand. Beach erosion will get worse before it gets better, especially this weekend.
Astronomical tides are hitting our coast right now, restricting walkers, and eroding away our beaches, at a time when erosion is already a problem.
"The overall problem is beaches all across the state and nation are losing sand at a higher rate than they're gaining," said Paul Gayes, Coastal Carolina University Marine and Wetland Studies.
This weekend, the full moon will mean even higher tides. The problem is the tides are so high, they're reaching the dunes and pulling sand from there.
"It wouldn't be taking as big of a storm to attack the dunes this time of year, so in that regard, there's some reason for concern," said Gayes.
He points out right now, the sand is at its thinnest. It's been years since the last beach renourishment.
A beach renourishment project should start in Surfside Beach in the next two months.
