The plan for a ferry that would transport both cars and people to Sandy Island is dead.

Back in December, Coast RTA got approval to obtain an unused car ferry from Alabama, but Coast RTA Director, Myers Rollins Jr., says it would cost them too much to upgrade the infrastructure on both the island and the mainland to accommodate a vehicle ferry.

Rollins says the agency is still committed to providing a ferry for the island's residents, but it will probably be for passengers only.

"Given the economic tsunami that we're all facing at the federal level, at the state level and certainly locally, trying to secure a quarter of a million dollars to upgrade infrastructure is probably nice to do, but not a have to do," Rollins said.

Coast RTA started looking for a ferry after three Sandy Island residents died in a boating accident in 2009.
