CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC -- Four Chesterfield County animal shelter employees are on administrative leave after they were accused of shooting and killing as many as 22 dogs, then burying the dogs' bodies at the county's animal gravesite.

Sheriff Sam Parker says an animal rights group dug up the graves on Goodale Road and found the bodies of the dogs. He says the county's policy is to use medication to euthanize animals, not a weapon.

The shelter is closed until the investigation is complete, but you can still adopt animals.

Sheriff Parker notified state police to determine if the case needs to be investigated as a criminal matter or policy violation.

You can read background on the story on WSOC's web site.
