Arcelor Mittal in Georgetown began making steel again Tuesday.

About 33 salaried and 144 hourly employees are currently working at the mill, according to spokeswoman Mary Beth Holdford.

More workers will be hired and retrained as needed. The company has just one shift working now.

Based on current market conditions, Arcelor Mittal anticipates producing close to 264,000 tons of wire rod annually at the Georgetown steel mill.

The plant was forced to close in July 2009 because of the recession.

Last summer, union workers voted to accept lower wages in an effort to reopen the plant.

Close to 350 people were working at the mill when it closed its doors.
