Thelonius Ragin, 40, served time for murder before deputies in Florence say he tried to kill his girlfriend and held her son hostage.

Officials with the Florence County Sheriff's Office say he stabbed his girlfriend at their home in the Glendale Subdivision of Florence County Sunday morning. Deputies tell NewsChannel 15 he wouldn't allow the woman's young son to leave. After a few hours, police say they convinced Ragin to release the boy. The child was not harmed. The victim continues to recover from her injuries.

NewsChannel 15 has confirmed with the New York State Department of Corrections that Ragin was released from prison in June of 2009 after serving 18 years for 1st degree murder and attempted armed robbery. Corrections officials say he beat a man, then shot him in Brooklyn, New York in 1991.

Officials for the New York State Parole Board says Ragin was approved to serve his parole under supervision in Florence. They say he is on parole for the rest of his life. Parole officials tell NewsChannel 15 if he is convicted of his most recent crime in Florence, his parole will be revoked and he will be sent back to prison in New York to serve a life sentence.

Ragin's bond was denied. He remains behind bars at the Florence County Detention Center.
