Friday, Santee Cooper threw a party to celebrate its one millionth free CFL (compact fluorescent light bulb) light bulb.

Santee Cooper has been giving out the bulbs in an effort to save on electricity for both the company and consumers. According to Energy Star, a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) will save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about 6 months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.

Santee Cooper made its announcement at Beach Colony Resort which put Santee Cooper over the one-million mark. "Every CFL we install saves not just that customer but will save the Santee Cooper system, and I think that's important to get across.

You know, power is getting more and more expensive and so the more we can save, the more we can maintain rates and we encourage everyone to get out there and install all they can," said Marc Tye, Santee Cooper.

Santee Cooper hopes its light bulb give-away will save 209 kilowatt hours by 2020.
