Florence police held a luncheon Thursday for the kids in their basketball camp.

The 45 campers spent the last eight weeks learning about more than just basketball. The kids got lessons on teamwork, self-respect and staying away from gangs.

"Seven years ago we started this camp. We wanted to make a difference in the kids in the community. We thought of the basketball as a hook to get the kids in the program," said Lt. George Mack, the camp organizer.

Chief Anson Shells gave awards to people who donated to the camp.

Police will continue to monitor the campers to make sure they're doing ok in school.
