CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- An innovative dropout prevention program on the South Carolina coast is wrapping up another season.
The 21st Century Spirit Ocean Adventure program of the South Carolina Maritime Foundation concludes with a Friday celebration at the Charleston Maritime Center.
The celebration features the work of the students during the seven-week summer program.
The effort is a dropout prevention program for 40 rising ninth graders at schools in Charleston County where more than 40 percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunches.
Students develop leadership and character development skills during the program that includes a weeklong sail aboard South Carolina's tall ship, The Spirit of South Carolina.
