COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina Farmers Market in Columbia will close next month, moving to a new location.

The State newspaper reported Tuesday the existing market across from Williams-Brice Stadium will close at noon Aug. 14.

The market will reopen before dawn Aug. 16 in Lexington County, on U.S. 321 near Interstates 26 and 77.

Assistant agriculture commissioner Larry Boyleston says producers were notified in letters mailed Friday.

Boyleston says the dates are firm. The new market was supposed to open in the spring, but has suffered construction and financing delays.

He says two or three vendors who sell large quantities will continue using the old market even after the University of South Carolina takes over the site for football parking. Their privately financed buildings won't be ready yet.
