A popular Florence funeral home director has been killed in a motorcycle accident.

The family of J. Lawrence Smith, 55, says he died from injuries suffered in the Saturday morning accident behind the Florence-Darlington Technical College on West Lucas Road in Florence County.

Smith owned and managed Smith Funeral Home in Florence.

Highway Patrol says Smith was taking a motorcycle training course at the college when he lost control of the bike and was thrown off. We're told Smith was wearing a helmet.

Highway Patrol says they're still deciding who will handle the investigation since the accident happened on private property and they don't typically handle accidents on private property.
