ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- The two South Carolina Republicans seeking to take on House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn are heading to a recount.

A handful of votes were separating political newcomer James Pratt and 2008 Republican nominee Nancy Harrelson in Tuesday's GOP primary runoff.

State election officials say the less than 1 percent margin means an automatic recount. The state Election Commission is to meet Friday and set a time for the re-count.

Pratt is a 50-year-old Florida native who played outside linebacker for the Gators. The manager of an outdoor advertising company in Orangeburg says he worries about government spending and debt.

Harrelson is a 56-year-old grandmother who works in the construction industry and campaigned on creating jobs through tax cuts for small businesses.
