Monday, U.S. Representative Gresham Barrett talked about ways to explore the potential energy resources off South Carolina's coast days after President Obama reversed a ban on offshore drilling.
Barrett spoke to people at Plyler Park in Myrtle Beach about his plan, The Palmetto Project, which involves offshore drilling and expanding nuclear power production across South Carolina.
He says tapping into these energy resources will create thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in revenue for the state.
"We've got 4 billion cubic feet of natural gas off our coast. This would allow us to go in and tap those natural resources and use them here for South Carolina. It could be up to 2200 jobs in the industry that relates to that and up to 280 million dollars of royalties," said Representative Barrett
He said that he'll work to keep the environment safe and to prohibit the establishment of any offshore energy facility within 20 miles of South Carolina's coast.
We want to point out that Barrett is a republican gubernatorial candidate in South Carolina.
