City leaders in North Myrtle Beach declined comment on their recently suspended Director of Public Safety at a Monday night council meeting.
Mayor Marilyn Hatley and City Manager John Smithson both declined to speak on the investigation and instead directed questions to city spokeswoman Nicole Aiello.
"It is a personnel matter, so it will be something that we cannot discuss with the public, because it is personnel," Aiello said before the meeting began.
The city manager suspended Public Safety Director William Bailey last week for lying to them about the theft of his service weapon.
On December 21, Bailey reported to Horry County Police that someone stole his glock from his glove compartment.
In a statement a few days later, the city said Bailey told them the gun was in a locked glove compartment. A day or two after that, the city retracted the statement and said there is no lock on Bailey's glove compartment.
A statement said Bailey misled the city administration, and he was suspended pending an investigation.
