ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities still remember two South Carolina officers whose shooting deaths sparked one of the biggest gun battles state police can recall.
The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports that friends laid wreaths Tuesday on the sixth anniversary of the deaths of Abbeville County sheriff's Sgt. Danny Wilson and state constable Donnie Ouzts.
Wilson was ambushed at the home of the Bixby family. They were irate because highway workers were starting a widening project that took about 20 feet of their land.
Ouzts was killed in the yard when he came to check on Wilson.
The shootings set off a 12-hour standoff and eventual shootout between the family and law enforcement. Steven Bixby was convicted of murder and is on the state's death row. His mother is also in prison.
