A man hit by an SUV while crossing Highway 17 in Horry County this week has died.

24-year-old Fernando Mendoza Garcia died from the injuries he suffered after being hit by the SUV Thursday night.

SC Highway Patrol says Garcia was leaving Kroger grocery store near restaurant row, walking across Highway 17 when he was hit.

Garcia was air-lifted to New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington where he later died.

All lanes of traffic were shut down from Lake Arrowhead Road to where 17 Business and Bypass merge as the medical helicopter landed right on Highway 17.

SC Highway Patrol says Garcia was wearing dark clothing and the driver was not at fault.
