As construction on a new Wal-Mart super center begins in Garden City, a nearby gentlemen's club has closed its doors, and neighbors wonder if the big box store paid off the Pink Pony Gentlemen's Club to go away to keep up with its image.

From a taxicab driver to a gas station attendant to a couple of neighbors, the word on the street is, yes.

But the property's owner denied the hostile takeover scenario some in the area have painted.

"As far as I know, Wal-Mart has nothing to do with it," said Jean Morrison who owns the building and other properties on the four-acre lot on Highway 17 business.

The Pink Pony Gentlemen's Club opened 12 years ago, and Morrison said club management told her the economy is forcing the club to close for a while.

Morrison said the lease agreement allows the Pink Pony's owner to sublet the lease, something that may have happened, Morrison said. But she said she's still in the dark about the situation and should know more by next week.

Terrence Piette lives in a neighborhood behind the club and has heard the rumors of Wal-Mart allegedly sending the Pink Pony to pasture.

"It's probably not good for their image ... to have a strip club right across the street from their store," Piette said.

Piette said he's not against Wal-Mart and is actually looking forward to the store, and he doesn't think a strip club would hurt the retail giant.

"I don't see how it's going to stop anybody from coming and shopping at Wal-Mart. Every time you go by a super center, their parking lot is jammed full of cars."

Seems to me that our world has enough problems, without stirring rumors, we need to focus on good things instead of gossip, with people losing jobs and business closing everyday, now what is the most logical reason they had to close, come on people.

Wal-Mart Intrusive

Wal-Mart, you are NOT WELCOME on the South End, either. Corporate HQ's put you in this location because you were not able to develop your big box chain in the Waccamaw Neck, so you located as close to the Georgetown County line as you could get.

We in Horry County are stuck with your big box store while those from the "Neck" will travel here and add to the congestion.

The South End residents should have had a say and known what was about to unfold in our neighborhoods BEFORE the surveying of the land was done and permits issued. Traffic is already horrendous and we don't even want a Wal-Mart in our neighborhood.

We do not want your run-off into our marshes nor your bright stadium lights illuminating our skies in our residential neighborhoods, or distracting the natural habitat of our wildlife. No one wants to hear your tractor-trailers being unloaded all hours of the day and night or your trash blowing across our highway. The other 10 Wal-Mart stores within a 50-mile radius cannot keep their parking lots cleaned, how do we residents know that this location will?

The Inlet Mall would have been a better-suited location. Business 17 and Hwy 17 Bypass run on BOTH sides of the mall and Wal-Mart would not have impacted neighborhood traffic.

The County Planning Commission needs to do a better job of zoning in the future, to prevent the big buildings, big noise and big environmental impact on our quaint, residential neighborhoods.

Shame on our leaders for allowing this to happen.

Family Oriented

The South end of the Strand has always welcomed and been more family friendly than other areas.

12 years was too long for the Pink Pony to embarrass our visitors as families headed to Murrells Inlet waterfront to dine on our local seafood.

Good-Bye Pink Pony and Good Riddence.

Maybe now that the raunchy establishment is gone, the County will change the zoning so that another strip club will not locate here, south of Myrtle Beach.

This end of the beach leaves alot to be desired. As much as I love it! The Inlet Square mall is suffering and there are empty shopping centers every where. Walmarts just going to put the rest of the area out. Walmart is not doing anyone in this area any favors! Take care of you small stores or Walmarts sure to shut them down too! Walmart is not looking out for thier employees or the unemployment they cause your friends and family as they destroy other companys. Sam Walton died & so did Walmarts values.

Clean it up!!

If you want to clean up the Grand Strand Beaches, don't focus on getting rid of the bikers. Get rid of the strip bars that usually have prostitution going on as well. And maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to make all the beach stores stop displaying those shirts with vulgar of sexual graphics on them. If you want to make the Grand Strand a place where families come to vacation, then clean it up!!!

Wal-Mart Lap Dance

I guess you could say The Pink Pony and Wal-Mart have at least one thing in common, There a good place to catch a desease because they both get there hands in your pants. I wouldn' be surprised if Wal-Mart dosen't allow the Pink Pony to reopen a coochie parlor in there store since there open all nightand sell booze.
