A spokeswoman for Florence School District One says parents were told their children were eligible to receive the H1N1 flu vaccine at school, but the district says the response hasn't been good.
Parents were given permission slips during the final week of October. Superintendent Larry Jackson said the response rate from parents who provided permission for their children to be vaccinated was considerably low. In a news release sent Friday, Jackson said "Florence One has over 15,000 students, yet only one-third of the parents have provided consent for their children to be vaccinated."
As a result of the poor turnout, the district is sending the permission slips home again with parents of elementary school children reminding them that vaccination day for the district is Wednesday, November 11th. Elementary school children will be the first to receive the vaccine since they are considered to be in a higher risk category.
The forms should be returned to school by the students on Monday, November 9th.
Parents who have questions about the H1N1 flu vaccine should call 1-800-27-SHOTS.
