Rodell Vereen pleaded guilty Wednesday morning, to a charge of buggery and a charge of violating probation. Vereen was arrested this summer, for a second time, for having sex with a horse.
Vereen was on probation at the time of his arrest for a charge of buggery he pleaded guilty to in July 2008.
On July 29, 2009, Horry County Police arrested Vereen for having sex with Sugar, a 21-year-old horse kept at Lazy B Stables near Longs, after Barbara Kenley, the horse's owner, provided them with surveillance video of Vereen having sex with Sugar.
In court Wednesday morning, Judge Larry Hyman revoked probation from the first buggery charge, stemming from the July 2008 incident, and ordered Vereen to serve the original 3 year sentence given at that time.
On the new charge of buggery, Judge Hyman sentenced Vereen to 5 years, suspended it to 3 years, and ordered that the sentence be served concurrently with the other sentence. So, Vereen will spend 3 years in jail.
Once he's released, Vereen will be on probation for 2 years and must seek mental health counseling.
In court, Vereen apologized for his actions. Kenley, the horse's owner said she was relieved Vereen would be in jail, but thinks he should have received a longer sentence. You'll hear from Kenley tonight on NewsChannel 15 at 6.
