The State Election Commission has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate signatures on a petition for an incumbent to run for Timmonsville Town Council.

Joe Whitaker, who's running for Timmonsville Town Council as a write-in candidate, sent a letter to the election commission alleging that 49 signatures on a petition for James Askins, an incumbent, to run were forged.

The Timmonsville Town Clerk says Askins did not submit paperwork to run again by the deadline, so he needed a petition to get on the ballot.

Officials with the Florence County Election Commission say they did not count those signatures, because the handwriting appeared to be the same, so Askins' name is not on the ballot.
