A flier circulating around Myrtle Beach and online lobs attacks against the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce's president and his wife, and critics are calling it classless and disgusting.
No one knows who produced it, but every candidate in the race is publicly condemning it. The flier attacks the incumbents and the chamber for running off the "most profitable group of tourists."
The author calls for a "rebellion" and says it's time to "unseat the power hungry city council" whose been bought by "powerful business interests."
The flier also claims the council "ran off the most profitable group of tourists we had during a major recession, then raised your taxes." It says Brad Dean, the president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, is to blame.
But it goes further.
It accuses Dean's wife of being an illegal alien, which is not true. It also uses a profane term in describing Ms. Dean.
There are four candidates listed on the flier that are called "representatives that listen" and that are seemingly being endorsed: Mark McBride (mayoral candidate) and city council candidates Mike Lowder, Adam Parness and Karen Mitchell.
"The four of us who are on that absolutely ... there's not one of us who would be involved in anything attacking anyone's wife," McBride told NewsChannel 15 on Sunday.
A local political activist, Sally Howard, said she's beyond disgusted.
"In fact, I really wouldn't even want to talk about it, but it is out there. It's front-page news, it's TV news, and it's on-the-street news. For the sake of Brad Dean and his wife, I hope this person is found, and I hope they're sued for slander."
