State Senator Hugh Leatherman from Florence is on the other side of the world working to bring jobs to the Palmetto State.

The senator is travelling with a coalition of other southern states that are all trying to lure companies from Asia.

Senator Leatherman says despite the rough global economy, he believes some businesses may build operations here.

"These companies look long-term, particularly over here in the Asian countries. They're not looking for a quick profit, they're looking long term. I'm excited about the response we're getting. I believe we'll see some of these companies come into our state," said Senator Hugh Leatherman.

Senator Leatherman will be in Japan until Wednesday.

Then he'll visit businesses in China.

We are financing our own destruction

Posted by G S, Longs - Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 8:06 a.m.

Why bring companies from other countries to establish manufacturing centers here? One of the major problems in our economy now is the fact that imports far exceed domestic production. When imports exceed domestic production, domestic manufacturers shut down, jobs are lost and the economy as a whole suffers. Even though this avenue will produce some jobs, it will relinquish more control of this country to outsiders. We can be assured that they will not have our best interest at heart.

A good for instance would be the "clunker rebate". What was the largest volume of new cars sold? It was not American. So we in fact paid foreign car manufacturers even more money to buy their cars. Just how did that stimulate our economy? When most of that money left this country it must have made us a laughing stock. It seems that we are financing our own destruction.

Go to Wal-Mart and pick up 10 items and see how many are from other countries, primarily Asian. How much of the money that those products are sold for stays in this country? The majority of the money goes out of this country and stimulates the economy of other nations. If we import industry to provide jobs we will become dependent upon them. Then if they pull out, where are we then?

If those same companies set up manufacturing here it will not be long until this country will be governed by the dictates of the major suppliers of jobs and merchandise. We have given this country away, by allowing foreign commerce to dictate so much of our industrial direction. Certainly greed, unions and political influence priced domestic production far above imported goods. But there is where control and influence should have been directed, not at attaining greater percentages of imports. We need to learn to live in our own country again if it is not too late. Support our domestic production and take away all the tax breaks and perks that we are giving foreigners to set up here and ship goods here. Or have we got ourselves in so deep now that we can't get out? Have we got that Tiger by the tail and can't let go for fear he will turn and consume us?
