A Carolina Forest High School student died Friday, after being shot by a school resource officer. School officials say the student first stabbed the officer, and the officer responded by shooting the student.

Because the incident involved an SRO, the State Law Enforcement Division is now handling the investigation.

School officials say classes were just getting underway at the school, when 16-year-old Trevor Varinecz asked to see the school's resource officer, Marcus Rhodes.

Officer say they met in Rhodes office, near math classrooms in the building called "F" house.

Officials say Varinecz confronted Rhodes and the two got involved in what a school spokesperson calls a tussle at about 8:20 Friday morning.

"We know that the student did have a knife on him, and we know that there were shots fired," said the school district's public information officer, Teal Britton.

Britton says Varinecz stabbed Rhodes, then Rhodes shot Varinecz. School staff members didn't see the altercation, but heard it behind the closed door of Rhodes' office, and one staff member called 9-1-1. Within minutes, the campus was under lockdown and Varinecz and Rhodes were on their way to Conway Medical Center at approximately 8:55am.

The Horry County Corner, Robert Edge, says Verinecz was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at the hospital at 9:34am. An autopsy is planned for Saturday morning.

Although the school district says several shots were fired, the coroner's office would not confirm how many times Varinecz was hit.

As the story unfolded, students at the school grabbed their cell phones and began texting and calling others on the outside.

"Everybody's just asking me if I was ok and everything. They don't know what's going on in there. We know more out here," said Brook Jordan, a senior at Carolina Forest High.

Soon, worried parents began to gather with questions no one seemed to be able to answer. "I don't know if they have the shooter, I don't know if the shooter is a student," said Jackie Burke, a parent of a CFHS student.

Rumors were flying and police couldn't say much.

"A lot of people are saying a lot of different things and it's not only our job but it's also SLED's job to get to the bottom of it and find out exactly what occurred," said Sgt. Robert Kegler, Horry County Police Department.

Within a couple of hours, school officials had determined the incident was long over, no other students were in danger and parents were allowed to pick up their children about ten at a time, though the school remained open for class. A line of cars soon snaked all the way down Gardner Lacy Road.

The school had its crisis plan in place during the incident and Britton says, teachers and staff did what they were supposed to do.

"People knew exactly what their stations were and exactly what their duties were and they did that," Britton said.

The school resource officer, Marcus Rhodes, has been released from Conway Medical Center.

Here's what we know of Trevor Varinecz:

He was 16 years old, an 11th grader at Carolina Forest and an Horry County student since elementary school. We have heard from a source close to the family, that Trevor had a form of Autism, but we have not been able to confirm that with the family directly or with any school officials.

School will be open as normal on Monday.

NewsChannek 15 has requested an official report, as well as copies of the 9-1-1 tapes, from Horry County. We'll let you know when we get that report.

Officer Rhodes I commend you, if parents would discpline there children and teach them manners and how to respect themselves and others at home they would know how to behave in public. As for Smith/Dillon, I'm from Marion, I had always heard that people from Dillon were rednecks and bullies and you seem to support that thought. You seem to be one of those that could have used some discipline at home and been taught manners because you truly do not have any. It's people like you that make it necessary to have officers in our schools that NEED to carry guns for their protection and for the protection of the teachers and students.

No Need To Judge

First let me say God Bless all of those who have been struck by this tragedy. I'm sure as we follow this story, people will tend to form opinions and hypothesis concerning it. We can all ask why either one of them acted or reacted they way they did. I can only begin by trying to put myself in that office that morning. It's so easy to say what one will or won't do. Therefore I refrain from throwing any stones. I offer many prayers to all. The justice system will do what it has to do without prejudice. For the parents of Trevor, I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you find peace in your heart. For SRO Rhodes and your family, I hope you also find the peace you need. Many blessings to CFHS Students, Faculty and Staff.

Shoot to Kill...

Yes it's sad story. But that's what happens when parents lose control of their rights to bring up their kids. This kid lacked social skills and had behavioral issues (Asperger's Syndrome)from childhood. He should have been placed in Special ED thru-out school yrs. Then everyone would have known that an 'angry outburst' was on the horizon. To bring a weapon to school states one thing! Period. That officer saved not only his own life but others as well! If 'Asperger's Syndrome' is truly from parents genes, then the parents are at fault for not taking that extra step in helping their son with social skills long before school years.

If you are not educated enough to post a comment with correct spelling and grammar, you most likely do not have the intelligence to post an intellectual comment about the unfortunate incident. Think about what happened; anyone placed in that situation would have reacted in the same way.

Hey Fishy who said anything about three shots being fired and how do you know the guy did not stab him or attempt to stab him more than once. If someone were stabbed me and I had a gun I would shot them too. The officer was just defending himself and he is truly the only person that knows what went on in that room. The kid mighted want to get the officer out so he and others could do a Columbine on the school. We do not know what was going on.

Hey tax paying mother from Aynor

Posted by Albert Einstien, Conway - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 2:39 p.m.

You need to think before you write and examine facts. You accused the school of not using metal detectors. First of all, metal detectors are in use at the school. Second, CFHS is made up of about 14 seperate buidings that all contain rooms where classes are held. How could the school possible search every student every day? Do you know how much each detector costs, or how many people are required to run such equipment? Do you know how many detectors each school has? Do you know how much money YOU pay in taxes each year? What do you know? I'll bet you don't know much. You don't even know when it is appropriate for you to open your mouth to show the world how ignorant some of the residents of this great state really are. People like you reinforce the stereotypes that non-southerners form about us. Do us all a favor and go back to sleep. Stop making people in Horry County look bad. CFHS is a good school. Officer Rhodes is a good man. Let's allow SLED time to do its job and publish an accurate report of the facts before we jump to conclusions.

fishy to me

Posted by Ellen Smith, Conway - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 2:14 p.m.

Maybe he had something on the officer, and went to tell him. and the officer was afraid it would ruin his career. How big was the knife? One shot would of put him down on the ground. but three! come on. after he was down he could of yelled for help, people were right by the door. Why three shots? One would of done it. I think he was afraid that he would talk.

Thoughts and Prayers for all Involved

Posted by Agent's Wife And Teacher, SC - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 1:27 p.m.

As the wife of a law enforcement officer I know the feelings (to a degree) that Officer Rhodes' family are feeling. Anyone in a law enforcement family knows that everyday we have the feeling of "will he/she come home" today from work, no matter where they are assigned for work. The teacher side of me goes to the thoughts of the SRO in my own building. He is constantly roaming the halls and talking to the teachers, staff and students. Some of the students may see it as "interrupting and butting in," but what he is really doing is trying to get to know the kids and heading off any problems that he may have heard rumored to be occurring.
I am a parent, and feel that Officer Rhodes did what he was trained to do. We will not know what fully happened in that room, but put yourself in his shoes. I do feel that he probably stopped an even larger tragedy from happening yesterday.
People here are saying that SRO's shouldn't be armed- to that I say "why not?" Just like any other officer, they are trained to not use their gun unless their life is felt to be in danger. I think that being stabbed is a "feeling of danger."
My thoughts and prayers go out to both families and their friends. Officer Rhodes seemed to love children and love helping them, so this will have an even bigger impact on him than many realize. The student, from what I have seen and read, seemed to be dealing with some issues that led him to do this yesterday. My thoughts and prayers are also to the students, teachers and staff at CFHS. Any tragedy can pull a school either closer, or farther apart. Hopefully you will be able to mend and heal and move forward from this event and learn from it as well.

Possible Court Case

This is gonna be one of them cases where the parents sue the school system.
Why ?
Because if there was no surveillance camera in the room, then it's their word against his.
And since the boy cannot speak for himself, an attorney probably will.

Don't try to use "mental" problem as this 16 yr old is in the 11th grade. Didn't fail?!! That's says something about our schools. To have Police Officers in our schools states one thing; NO PARTENAL CONTROLS. I support 'shoot to kill' when anyone pulls a weapon out to use! Carolina Forest HS area requires more police and maybe this will bring that about.

shooting /stabbing

Posted by mother of a high school student, aynore - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 10:44 a.m.

everyone is putting blame on the officer when in real he was just doing his job.to protect and to serve.its the childs fault he went in there with a knife.
But the true people who are in fault is the school us being taxe payers have paid for metal dectors in the school to keep our children safe from what im to understand they had them why arent they on FIrst of all if they where on like there suppose to be then two people might not of got hurt and we all wouldnt be on here making comment. i now several schools in horry county have them but there not hooked up so i say to the school officails why arent they and now when will they all be put in use like we paid for if it was on that day he would never got into the school with a knife people need to think about that my heart and prayers goes out to both familys cause there both in alot of pain.one lost a loved one ,the other is upset cause he is probably thinking what else could i have done.im a mom i feel he acted in self defense you never know what a child of that age is capable of i have a 16 yr old and he might not look it but he is strong then you put a weapon in his hand.my point is the questions need to be to the school and the metal dectors and not just that school but all schools in horry county you can never under estimate your child and what they will and can do.

The simple way to put it is this way. Put yourself in officer rhodes position what would you do? Dont be so quick to blame officer rhodes. He had no choice and i am sure that he will feel bad for having done that. All schools have situations like this or like the other incident years ago. When these incidents happened the faculty did what they needed to do to protect the students.

about trevor

Posted by Amanda Hemsing, Conway - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 9:52 a.m.

i've know trevor since i moved here in 2005. we became best friends very quickly. he was one of my first friends when i came to carolina forest middle schoo.l(when the high school and middle school were still on one campus)he was really a great friend and my friends sydni and regan two of trevor's other closest friends were shocked when we heard that the student who was killed was our friend trevor. we(regan and i) had been on lockdown all day on friday from 8:25 to 3:25. before 3:25 theprincipal simply told us that officer rhodes had been confronted by a student and was released from the hopsital but the student had died at the hospital. then everyone was dissmissed from school to go home. i saw regan on my way to going to my bus. then after i got on my bus i heard students talking about who the student was but iwasn't paying much attention. i just wanted to go home after a long day in one class all day. my friend sydni was at my house and she told me that hte student that had been killed was our friend trevor. i decided to call our friend regan. the first time i left a message and then later she called back. i told her that sydni was at my house and then i broke the news to regan. she began to cry over the phone so i had sydni talk to her. then sydni started crying and then we all were crying. none of u s would ever had guessed that trevor would do something like this. it was a real shock. even if we were there when it happened none of us could have done anything. he was over the limit in depression and he just cracked. we all will really miss him. it will be hard not to cry at graduation in 2011 when we graduate knowing that he won't be there graduating with us. he will be missed greatly by us. I am a student at CFHS and yesterday was not a good day at all. It started at 8:25 when someone had came over the loudspeaker saying a "code red" my teacher went on to tell us that this was a drill because we were going to have one later on in the mounth. 10 mins later Mis. Alen came over the loudspeaker and said "our school is under a code red and this is not a drill." We still did our Math test and at the end of first block Mis. Alen came back on the loudspeaker and said "that we are still under a code red and that everything was under control." My teacher then went on line so we could find out what was going on and all there was was a picture of our school and a line that said "student shoot and SRO stabed" this is not a thought that would have came threw my head to happen at my school but it did and there are many people that say that Officer Rhodes is so much bigger then Trevor Varinecz, but then have you ever been in this situation NO dont think so Officer Rhodes did what he had to do and what he was trained to do. Rhodes loves our school and has been there for 10+ years and loves the kids that go there even if they are trouble kids and I know that he would never do anything that would hurt us. He does alot of stuff for the kids at our school and in the commuite. He does Freazen for a Reason and a PRIDE camp during the summer. My prayers go out to both familys.

Very Sad

Only two people really know what happen in that room. One of them are dead so I guess we'll only know one side. I understand the resource officer trying to protect himself, but what force are you trained to used in a school or any where for that matter before deadly force. Do the officers not have tasers or pepper spray. Looking at the boys picture his frame is very small compared to the officer. Its very sad the officer was stabbed and released shortly after. The student is dead and now we hear the what ifs, well to late.

First of all im praying for both families. But i think the officer did what he had to do. I know that everyone hates that the child had to die but honestly someone was not going to make it out of that office alive. If he bought a knife to school then he intended to harm people and the officer possibly saved more lives parents of students at the school you should be thanking the officer and not condeming him get well soon officer Rhodes

CFHS Stabbing Incident

Posted by Peter Griffin, Conway - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 1:53 a.m.

During my years at CFHS, which comprised the first half of Officer Rhodes' tenure at the school, I often knew him as a person who insinuated himself into situations that he did not need to intervene in. He often came across as pushy, bullish sort of a man. A previous poster commented that he seemed to possess an attitude of "all students here are malcontents" - I would generally agree with this assessment. I did not get along with Officer Rhodes and did not enjoy the times that I had to interact with him.

That said, notwithstanding my personal opinion of Officer Rhodes - we cannot assume to know what happened today. There are numerous conflicting accounts of what took place in that office. What we do know is that a 16 year old boy's life has unfortunately been extinguished. We also know that a police officer who may have been doing his duty and protecting the campus from further harm will now have to suffer through judgment and ridicule before all the facts are known.

I personally did not care for Officer Rhodes. However, I'm not ready to condemn him yet. Those of you in your glass houses should really consider the stones you're throwing.

Rush to Judgement!!! How can anyone do that!! do we have all the facts?

Posted by Michele Fee, Surfside - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 1:16 a.m.

It seems there is a plethora of "judgments" being made here, I cannot believe that most (not all) of the intelligent comments have either been made by students or persons that have some idea what it takes to be an OFFICER OF THE LAW, whether it be the law at a school (which if you ask me is one of the most important post's an officer can have) or elsewhere... SLED will investigate this situation. I have the utmost faith that the truth will PREVAIL. For everyone to "RUSH TO JUDGMENT" is just plain irresponsible not to mention without all the facts it is irrational and stupid... People please let SLED do their jobs as they will have ALL the FACTS. I am sure they know how to do their jobs better than those of us that simply read the news and let our emotions make us spout off what we feel without having most likely even 1/2 the story! my Prayers go out to Officer Rhodes & his Family & Trevor Varinecz's family as both Families are in Pain tonight and the last thing either family needs is to read a bunch of judgmental arrogant persons thinking they know what either family is going through. I say we all need to keep our OPINIONS off the comment page unless it is based on Fact.

Sad Reminder

Posted by Completely Shocked, SC - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 12:51 a.m.

First of all, everyone posting comments should keep in mind that they are very likely being read by both the family of the officer and the family of the teen who was killed. I am absolutely amazed how inconsiderate people can be with zero facts of what happened.

If people wonder why it is necessary to have armed police officers in schools, take a look at a site that is dedicated to the subject: http://schoolshooting.org/. The map shows that not only do incidents like this happen often, they can happen anywhere.

What happened today was a tragedy and I am certain that NO ONE is more upset and heartbroken about the kid being shot than the officer who was forced to pull the trigger. Remember, he is tasked with the job of protecting the staff and students of the school and sometimes that involves some VERY difficult decisions. It is also important to remember that only one of the people involved had bad intentions when arriving at the school. The extent of those intentions may never be known, but it is HIGHLY likely that the officer prevented what could have been a MUCH bigger tragedy.

I imagine once all of the facts come out, most reasonable people will realize that the officer did what had to be done to protect everyone in the school. I am terrified to think of what could have happened had he not been there.

My heart goes out to all involved. I'm sure that many will be seeking answers that will never come.

To the negative comments.. are you crazy???

SERIOUSLY GUYS????
OFFICER RHODES HAS BEEN WITH CF FOR 10+ YEARS.. THATS A LONG COMMITTMENT AND TO ME, THAT SAYS HE LOVES WHAT HE DOES AND HE LOVES ALL OF HIS STUDENTS.
THIS IS THE MAN WE ALL DEPEND ON TO DEFEND OUR CHILDREN, AND THIS MAN WAS ATTACKED. RHODES ABSOLUTELY DID THE RIGHT THING!!
HE NEVER EVER EVER EVERRRRRR INTENDED TO KILL THE CHILD!!! THAT WAS NOT HIS INTENT AT ALL.
WHO KNOWS.. WHAT IF THE KID WAS GOING AFTER HIS GUN?? RHODES WAS BEING STABBED AND HE TOOK ACTION.
WHAT IF YOUR CHILD WAS THE ONE THAT WAS BEING STABBED? I BET YOU'D BE UPSET WITH RHODES IF ACTION WAS NOT TAKEN.. IT'S THE SAME CONCEPT.
MY HEART GOES OUT TO BOTH FAMILIES. THIS WAS NEVER AN INTENT AND I HOPE EVERYBODY REMEMBERS THAT!

Great Job Officer Rhodes

To start out Officer Rhodes was my Camp Pride Instructer && was for many years before. Officer Rhodes, even being in Camp Pride, was a very caring person && would never do anything to hurt anyone. In all the time he was an officer he never pulled his gun until this mourning. Trevor deserved what he got && he knew what he was doing when he asked to see Officer Rhodes. He came into the CFHS with a knife in his bookbag or whatever. He knew he was looking for trouble. Everyone is saying that Officer Rhodes was in the wrong for pulling his gun, he was not in the wrong,he is doing what he was trained to do. My mother worked in Carolina Forest Shopping Center && had many problems with Trevor && two other boys. In which many officers were called to handle him && his friends. I will pray for the mother && father of the student. But my message to anyone who thinks Officer Rhodes was in the wrong is that you must not have known him cause he would NEVER pull a gun on a 16yr old. And to the woman who said she spoke with Officer Rhodes do me && everyone else a favor && go to the nearest Waccamaw Mental Health Center && get everything in that stupid little head of yours checked asap. We love you Officer Rhodes!! Get Better && thank you for saving every life in that school.

You have to be really stupid. How can you blame this officer for doing what he is taught to do. How do we know that the officer knew this kid had a mental problem. If someone stabbed you and you had a gun I am sure you would shoot them. I sure would. Another thing is if this kid had already stabbed him why would you try to disarm him. Thats bullcrap. Thats like soldiers fighting in the war going to jail for murder. Guess you agree with that to right?

Former Student at Carolina Forest

Posted by Former CFHS Student, Conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 11:19 p.m.

I am a former student from Carolina Forest. I graduated in 2005. I was in NJROTC and knew Officer Rhodes only because he made a point to go through the students and befriend everyone. He even was in charge of a camp over the summer called camp PRIDE that I helped with that was specifically for challenge children. He loved children, and always wanted to help. So the earlier comments about Officer Rhodes being a bully is completely false. If the child was trouble and disrespectful and a bad student, then yea, he's going to get into trouble, and Rhodes isn't going to give him milk and cookies.

I also think it's a bit ridiculous that people are asking why there are no metal detectors. What do you think this is people? A prison? This school is one of the best and more conservative schools in the area. For the most part students feel free and safe, and you wanna turn it into a prison with gates and a metal detector. You can't get away from crime, sorry. There are crazy people everywhere. It's all about a wrong place at a wrong time. It could happen in the nicest of areas or in a church. It doesn't matter. So let's not be silly and take away the small freedoms that they still have in some schools. I definitly believe Officer Rhodes did what he had to. Anyone can look back on a situation and say well maybe it should have been handled this or that way, but look, someone is stabbing you multiple times. You use self defense. You don't mean for the person to die, you just want them to stop stabbing you. Bottom line, that boy knew what he was doing. Anyone with half a brain knows that if you attack someone like that, you can get hurt or killed back.

People my have a right to their opinions and all that crap, but until you have walked a mile in a cops shoes keep them to yourself. Police officers are not respected enough. They are under-payed considering the risks they have to take because of all the stupid and ignorant people in our world today. Laws are set in place for a reason. If you do not obey them then guess what you get in trouble.

No one knows what happened today except those two. It is a tragedy. If my husband is put in a situation like that I hope he thinks of his family at home and that he does what he has to do to come home to us alive. Any life lost is a tragedy.

I say to all the police officers out their, if your life is in danger, shoot first ask questions later.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE JUDGED BY 12 THEN CARRIED BY 6!!!!!!!!!!

Quick Responce

Posted by Nathan Stivason, Myrtle Beach - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 11:15 p.m.

I am a student at CFHS, today at about 8:25 a person came on the speaker saying 'this is a code red; no responce'. Now news going around the school said that we were to have a 'lockdown drill' on i think is the 28th of this month. After we heard this we were thinking that they mabey moved the drill up till the person came back on the speaker and said the same thing but added 'this is NO DRILL'. So our teacher did the propper things that she was to do. We staed in that class all do (7 to 8 hours) getting 20 min for lunch. While in the class room we had no idea what was going on. The teachers did not even know what was going on till about 2 or 3 hours after the shooting and stabbing, or they knew but would not tell us. Now thing i would like to know is why students at the school could not know what was going on? cause as a student if i do not know what is going on i would not be at my best for the code red say if it were a loose animal running around the campus. But if we would have known that a stabbing and shooting occured i am sure that we would have been at our best. Now why cant students at the school not allowed to know what happened? of course they would slip information but it is gonna happen sooner or later and if they would have just told us all of these false rumors would have been little to none. Now the SRO did the right thing. Just think he was in his small office and a kid walks in and starts a fight and stabbs him 7 times. SEVEN! What was the officer try to fight the pain of his bleeding cuts and disarm the kid? Now mabey if he got stabbed once but he got it seven times. So he did do the right thing, it happened in a split second. Now i know people are saying what about the metal dectors. We have them, do we use them? yes. Do we use them every week or day? No. so that answers some peoples questions. I there is any more questions my e mail is evhnathan@gmail.com.

I consider this a tragedy. It is a shame that this boy was killed, but the officer had every right to defend himself and others in danger. My simpathy goes out to both families involved and may God help mend the broken hearts of these families.

Why do all the other officiers crry tazer gun, and would that not have been safer for the fellow students and faculty? Of all the place not to discharge a firearm, I would think a school would be number one. Where did all those bullets lodge, and lucky there was no one else hurt.

Listen. I am a former police officer and have been in a very similar situation. Events like this happen in super fast forward and slow motion at the same time. All you have time to do is react and when you do, it is all based on training and muscle memory. Do you realize how deadly even a small knife is? From what I understand only the student and Officer Rhodes were in the room and unfortunately his is the only information we have. Anything else is speculation, which cannot be used to judge.

In response to the nay-sayers

Posted by CFHSMOM Grateful, Conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 10:35 p.m.

To the nay-sayers,
My child was just a few doors down the hall from Officer Rhodes office. Officer Rhodes quite possibly saved my own child's life today by doing what he HAD to do.
Would your feelings on this be different if your very own child was THAT close to the offender? Think about it.
I feel bad for the parents of this kid. But their kid was the one who went into school this morning determined to inflict harm on another person. So whose parents should have to ID their child's dead body? The offenders parents? Or the parents who had kids that were in class not hurting anyone? This thing very well could have turned out way more tragic than it already did. The officer could have been killed. Innocent children could have been killed.
Some spoke of Officer Rhodes wounds as if they were paper cuts. This was a huge deal that has impacted a lot of people. And until your own child is forced to smell the scent of blood or death or whatever it was that my child had to smell as he was being led out of the building by the police..... or until you have to sit at home and worry about whether or not you own child is safe.....I just don't think that YOUR opinion carries much weight here.
Now, just take a minute to really think about it. Consider how you'd feel if it was YOUR child in that building today. How would you be feeling about it then? Officer Rhodes is a HERO tonight! Not a criminal! And I for one am very grateful that HE was in charge of my child's safety today!!!!

Stabbing/Shooting

I am a teacher and I parent. Today was a tragedy for all parties involved. I know Officer Rhodes and I am positive he did what he felt was necessary to PROTECT himself, the students, and the faculty and staff of CFHS. My heart goes out to Officer Rhodes and his and family and the family and friends of the victim.

Marcus Rhodes is a wonderful person and officer

Posted by Officers Wife, Conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 9:49 p.m.

I cannot believe the comments that I have been reading all day about Officer Rhodes. I personally know Officer Rhodes as a compassionate, loving officer and man. He does not deserve the negative and disturbing comments that have been said about him. Yes it is a tragedy that a young boy lost his life and yes it is devastating for all people involved, however no man or women deserves to have their name and integrity smeared all over the internet. Officer Rhodes made a decision that will haunt him for the rest of his life. I want people to think what they would have done in a situation like this. Ask yourself a question, would you just sit back and let a person continue to assault you with the intention of causing great bodily harm? Officer Rhodes not only saved his own life, but he possibly saved the lives of many students and staff. There is nothing saying this young boy would not have continued to harm people. As a wife of a police officer, I know the last thing any officer wants to do is harm someone, especially a young child. I can only pray if my husband was in the same situation he would take whatever measure he had to if someone was going to harm him. Remember Office Rhodes has a family to go home to as well. It not fair for him to be scrutinized for protecting himself and stopping a person that was causing him harm. Is it easy to point figures at different groups of people; however actions need to be taken to protect our children. People need to realize something like this can happen anywhere and people don’t need to be reactive to this situation, but be proactive and correct what happened today, so it doesn’t happen again. The last comment I would like to make is to all the people who are speaking without knowing any of the facts. It is difficult to make any judgment on the officer without knowing all the facts and circumstances. So before anyone calls him a "murderer" they need to stop and think. This is a tragedy and it’s a shame that people are ignorant and don't take both the victim and the officer’s feelings into consideration.

what a shame

I'M SHOCKED #1 THAT THE YOUNG BOY WAS ABLE TO GET IN THE SCHOOL WITH THE KNIFE. #2 WITH THE MENTAL CAPACITY OF THE STUDENT, HE WAS LEFT ALONE WITH THE OFFICER IN THE FIRST PLACE. I WAS INFORMED HE WAS JUST SUSPENDED FOR 3 DAYS FOR CUSING AT HIS TEACHER. WHEN HE ASKED TO SEE THE OFFICER, WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE GO WITH HIM? MANY THINGS WERE OVERLOOKED TODAY AND AS A RESULT A YOUNG BOY IS GONE. THE OFFICER SUSTAINED NO LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. YET ALL SHOTS WERE FATAL ONES. I UNDERSTAND SELF DEFENSE BUT THIS BOY IS SMALL IN STATURE AND THE OFFICER IS TRAINED IN THE ABILITY TO DISARM AN ATTACKER. PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME LIKE I'M A 3 YEAR OLD CAUSE THE PIECES DON'T ADD UP.
A TEACHER GETS IN TROUBLE FOR ACCIDENTALLY LEAVING HER HUSBANDS GUN ON HER CAR WHEN SHE WENT TO WORK AT AN HORRY CO. SCHOOL. YET IT'S OKAY FOR THE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER TO CARRY AN ARMED GUN INTO THE SCHOOL.
MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE YOUNG BOYS FAMILY. THEY'RE IN OUR PRAYERS.

School shooting

Good job officer Rhodes. No one on here should criticize your actions unless they too have been stabbed with a large knife and had to react. If you hadn't shot him and he ran out and stabbed someone else these idiots would want you thrown in jail for not stopping him when you had the chance.

Resource officer?

Posted by W W, Myrtle Beach, SC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 9:46 p.m.

Who came up with that title? It sounds like someone who is supposed to locate chairs and desks, and get the best price on school supplies. Why not call him what he is? A school security officer, or whatever?

I read the teen was hit 7 times. I was trained that when you shoot an assailant, you don't stop shooting until your magazine is empty. You don't stop shooting because the assailant falls down. Officer Rhodes did what he was trained to do. He probably shot the kid 7 times only because he didn't have more bullets!

Officer Rhodes is going to wear this badge the rest of his life. Every day, he's going to wake up and look in the mirror, and the story will play in his mind. Shame on you who want to rub his face in it! I'm sure he feels bad enough already!

If he had laid down and let the kid stab him to death, would it have made you feel better? How many more people at the school would have been stabbed as a result?

If he was a bully to your kid, your kid probably gave him a reason to be so. What's going to happen when your kid grows up, disrespects a police officer because of the "fine example" you've set for him (or her) and gets in trouble, and can't hide behind mama's skirt tail any more? He'll probably get the crap beat out of him for disobeying an officer! I hope that's what happens! You need to look at Chris Rock's video about how NOT to get beat up by a police officer. It's more truthful than you think! And it SHOULD be!

Officer Rhodes, if you read this, I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you don't experience a lifetime of nightmares.

Don't rush to judgement

Posted by Jane Doe, Myrtle Beach - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 9:09 p.m.

No one knows how the situation presented itself today and, without facts, as usual, people rush to judge. It is a tragedy from all sides. Obviously, the officer felt sufficiently threatened that he needed to defend himself. One can never estimate how he/she will behave when they are threatened and/or attacked - no matter the age of the attacker.

As an Officer if the law, we are NOT trained to DISARM anyone. YES it is sad that the child died, and YES if I were in that Officer's shoes, I would have tried to do EVERYTHING in my power to prevent killing this kid; as I am SURE that Officer Rhodes did TRY to do. But, let's get REAL...the kid STABBED the Officer SEVEN TIMES before Officer Rhodes even thought about grabbing his weapon. I am sure that in his mind he was thinking all of the ways to prevent using his weapon. But, let's ask if this kid has had trouble around the school before. WHERE the are the PARENTS?? I have children, and I do understand that they sometimes can take the wrong path. When I was growing up in school we never even thought about bringing a gun or knife to school. We respected Police Officers and our Parents and our Elders. The children now days can't respect others because they don't even respect themselves!!! Again, I do believe that the problem not only lies on the children, but on the Parents as well. And while we are talking on the issue of guns and weapons, the question was brought up somewhere as to why are the Officers in the schools, are wearing guns...and I said...BECAUSE THE KIDS HAVE GUNS!!!
I know that I am getting a little off of subject, but the shooting was just, it was deadly force issue and we as law Officers are trained to use deadly force when a gun OR a KNIFE is in the mix.
NOW, not only is Officer Rhodes a fellow Officer, he WAS my DARE TEACHER!!! Get well soon Officer Rhodes and if you are reading this...Thank You for everything that you have done for me in the past in becoming the Officer that I am...and YES..I would have done the same.
Now the questions that I have for the public is...
Why has the 10 Commandments been taken out of Schools, along with Prayers and the Paddle.
Why are Parents whooping there children for what they are doing wrong in Schools and at Home.
Why are we finding excuses for these Criminals...from everything to "he was abused as a kid and that's why he/she did what they did...or he/she came from a "broken home" that's why he/she is in a gang...
Why can't we as Parents come together and raise our kids, and put them on the right path...
and why are WE blamming the EVERYONE ELSE for the children's behaviors!?
ANSWER THAT!!!??

I told that something like this would happen years ago!!!

Posted by B. Jones, Myrtle Beach, SC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 9:02 p.m.

I (as a parent) spoke with this offier several years ago when my son was attacked at Carolina Forest High School. The response was shocking. I was told that my son got what he deserved. My son, a NJORTC officer, was attacked from behind and put in a choke hold until he passed out. His attitude was one of all the children attending the school where undesirables and deserved what ever happen to them. I knew at that point that this officer should not be in this setting and when I informed the county school administration of this I was told he was a good officer. I then spoke to a number of student and found that he regularly bullied some of the students along with being known for his attitude. Now maybe something will be done!!!!

This is very sad,he needed this kind of force for a 16 yr. old. He murdered this young man and now they say he was autistic he could have defended himself without deadly force this cop was just an accident
waiting to happen they say the cop was a bully anyway
I guess if you wear a badge that makes it alright. He
should be charged with something.

SO MY COMMENT IS TO THE PERSON FROM NY. YOU SAY YOU HAVE A GREAT RESPECT FOR RESOURCE OFFICERS BUT OBVIOUSLY THAT QUOTE IS FICTION. THE KID WALKED INTO A SCHOOL WITH ALL INTENTIONS OF WHAT HE WAS GOING TO DO. THE KID THINKS HE'S A MAN THEN HE SHOULD BE TREATED AS A MAN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY BUT AS FAR THE KID GOES....YOU FILL IN THE BLANKS. MAYBE ALL THE KIDS IN SCHOOLS WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND NOT TRY SOMETHING SO DUMB!!!!

To all the stupid people, if a man(and most 11th graders are full grown)attacks and stabs you, shoot him i would.

Thank you Officer Rhodes

Posted by Charlene LaValle, Conway, SC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8:22 p.m.

As the parent of a CFHS student, my first concern is why don't they use the metal detectors. As soon as I heard about the lockdown at CFHS, my first reaction was panic. I was concerned not only about my child, but the other children at the school. I thank Officer Rhodes wholeheartedly for acting the way he did. I am very sorry that the young man lost his life, but how many other lives did the officer save. My thoughts and prayers go out to both families and I pray that Officer Rhodes never forgets that by doing what he did he may have help avoided something much worse from happening.

Unbelieveable

I cant believe the comment from elanor, the officer was stabbed, all stabbings can be life threatning. This student brought a knife to school, asked to meet with the resource officer, autism or not, this was planned and the resource officer acted correctly in self defense. I know elanor has never been stabbed because she would know, you are thinking about living, when you have to use deadly force.Police officers are trained to use the next highest form of protection. If the suspect uses a knife, the line of defense for the officer is his gun.Its like being shot at, you cant train for the exact situation.

Murder of the student

Posted by steve smith, dillon,s.c. - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8:18 p.m.

I agree with the lady this needs to be fully investigated. After the 1st shot it was battery, the 2nd shot,2nd degree murder, the 3rd shot was 1st degree
murder.I got pulled over 1 day by 1 of these S.C.law
officers(BULLIES) FOR A SEAT BELT violation next thing
I knew he was wanting my vehicle reg.when I could not find it fast enough he got very verbally offensive then when I told him to not be cursing at me I would
find it. He put his hand on his gun and my heart almost stopped.I have never been arrested for anything and have only had 1 ticket in 30 yrs.of driving. He must have either been a big coward or a
murderer,shooting a 110 lb.teenager with a 45 caliber
pistol no wonder he died he probably almost blew him
in half. This is absolutely sickening just like they
showed just yesterday about the dump truck incident.
I personally saw them chasing a boy years ago on a motorcycle they set up a roadblock and when the black
boy saw it he laid the motorcycle down and nearly tore his left leg off it didn't matter though when the bike stopped they were on him like flies beating kicking and stomping him.For any big mouth who doesn't
agree if you don't have kids shut up to start with if
you do put your self in the parents shoes he was a kid point blank who they will never get to hug again.

Get a grip

Posted by J.T. K., Surfside - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8:15 p.m.

Ms. Rutledge, you need to get a grasp on reality. It's a good thing you were never a police officer, if you had you would have been 6 foot under a long time ago.
You have no idea what took place other then what rumors are saying. If NY was so great why are you in SC and not there?
If the student had attacked someone else you would most likely be one of the first to condem the police for not taking any action they deemed necessary.
You should say you are sorry for your statement about the officer, but after reading your comments I am sure he as well as other know you are SORRY.

If you were in this situation

I am very tired of people saying bad things about officer rhodes. He was just doing what he thought was necessary and i know if you were faced in this type of ssituation you would do the same thing. I doubt he had time to decide where to shoot trevor. I think adrenaline took over.

Please show compassion

Posted by Ledena Todd, conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8:04 p.m.

It seems to me that this is a horrible tragedy on every side. I am sure that both parties are really hurting. What I do know is that on many occassions I have been at that school for my own child and witnessed the very compassionate and caring man that Officer Rhodes is. Most of the children see him as a father figure and someone that always expects the greatest things from them. He truly cares about them and has a desire to help them. I grieve deeply for the mother of Trevor and for Office Rhodes as well. We can never say we know how they feel because we are not in their shoes. It is a horrible tragedy, but one that can't be erased. If you know this officer, then you know that he must have felt that he did what he had to do. Sometimes when adrenaline is flowing the least of us in stature are harder to control than you would think. Please stop and pray for this young man's family for they have lost something very precious. Also, stop and pray for Officer Rhodes because he has also lost something very precious. I am sure that he is in a lot of pain over what he had to do. I know that I expect him to keep my child safe, as I would imagine that you would feel the same way. I have the utmost respect for this officer as well as the principal. It is a tragedy and will remain to be that long after all of us have let go and moved on to something else. But these families can't do that. Please pray for them.

Bad situation

Posted by Matt The medic, Florida - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 7:52 p.m.

Eleanor Rutledge-
Simple answer to your question. Law enforcment officers are trained to meet force with similar force, and to above all, protect life. In this case, the officer was faced with a known threat to his life, and reacted as trained. As for shooting at arms and legs... Simply unrealistic. Only happens in bad John Woo movies. Hitting an arm while someone is flailing a knife at you is not a possibility. They are trained to hit center mass, and not to stop until whatever is attacking is no longer a threat. Please try to think these things through before you attempt to villify a good officer who did his best in a very bad situation. I wish him a speedy recovery and he and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

STRONG QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS

Posted by Eleanor Rutledge, Pawleys Island - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

As a retired Guidance Counsler who worked in one of the toughest schools in NY and I have a great respect for resourse officers as well as a great respect for their jobs I still have very strong questions and concerns regarding what happened today. Why did the officer who was enclosed in a small office have the need even IF he felt it necessory to shoot a gun to protect himself shoot the student more then once AND shot fatal shots rather then his arm or leg, etc. (non fatal shots)?? In such a small room as a office with furniture wasn't their the possibility of the officer using non armed force to disarm the child expecially of this students size versus the officers size? Arent these officers trained to DISARM a person especially a student of his stature? The officer was taken care of at the hospital and released very shortly after taken there so his wound was NOT DEADLY. DID IT DESERVE DEADLY FORCE??? I hope that this shooting will be investagated FULLY. I pray for this students family. Thank you for reading my story
