(Updated: 2:58pm Friday)

A Carolina Forest High School resource officer has now been discharged from the hospital after school officials say he was stabbed by a student. Officials say a student involved was shot, and now has died.

The incident happened on the campus of Carolina Forest High School, in Horry County.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge has confirmed for NewsChannel 15 the name and official cause of death for that student who was shot.

Edge says 16-year-old Trevor Varinecz, of Myrtle Beach died at Conway Medical Center at 9:34 Friday morning, of a gunshot wound. An autopsy will be performed on Varinecz Saturday morning.

Horry County School District spokeswoman Teal Britton tells NewsChannel 15 Varinecz has been in the Horry County School District since elementary school.

He then attended Carolina Forest Middle School until it split, and Varinecz was moved to Ocean Bay Middle. He attended Carolina Forest High School for his freshman and sophomore years.  He was a junior at the high school.

According to Carolina Forest High School's website, Marcus Rhodes, whose picture is attached to this article, is the only School Resource Officer listed at the school.

The Horry County School District has declined to confirm that Rhodes was the officer who was involved.

Earlier in the morning, Horry County School District Spokesperson Teal Britton told NewsChannel 15 an 11th grade male student asked to see the school resource officer Friday morning. After which, a confrontation occurred. Britton said the student stabbed the school resource officer and that the school resource officer returned with a gunshot.

The following statement was released by Horry County School District Spokesperson, Teal Britton Friday Morning:

"An incident occurred this morning at Carolina Forest High School at approximately 8:20 a.m. The incident resulted in injuries to the student and the SRO and both were transported via ambulance to Conway Medical Center. The incident was not witnessed by any other students. Their conditions are unknown at this time. The school remains under lockdown at this time. Parents will be allowed on campus to pick up students in an orderly fashion. The matter is under investigation by law enforcement."

Parents are allowed to pick up students at Carolina Forest High School, but classes are continuing.

HCPD does have a mobile command unit station at the school.

Carolina Forest High School's football game against South Florence High School for tonight has been postponed. It has been rescheduled for Monday, October 19th at 6:30pm at Memorial Stadium at South Florence High School.

Enough Already

Posted by Common Sense, SC - Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 1:24 p.m.

A knife is a deadly weapon in the hands of ANYONE, even a small child. Most statistics show that there are just as many stabbing deaths as shooting deaths.

Yes, the officer was released from the hospital after several hours, but only because he was lucky enough that none of the stab wounds ended up being life threatening. It isn't reasonable to ask someone who is being stabbed 7 times to take the time to see if any of their wounds are life threatening before determining the best way to defend themselves. The officer was trained how to respond to the attack and that is exactly what the officer did. If the student had stopped their attack after the first 2 or 3 shots from the officer, they too would likely be alive today.

Webster's dictionary defines a tragedy as "a disastrous event" and that is exactly what occurred. I am saddened by the tragic events that resulted in the death of a teen in one of our schools, but let's please keep in mind that the teen was the attacker and the officer was the victim of the attack. Now the officer has become a victim of the verbal assault that has continued ever since.

All officers receive training which tells them when to use what level of force. Based on conversations with numerous police officers, it appears that the officer followed their training. In other words he did the job he was hired to do in exactly the manner he was trained to do it.

We all need to support the two families involved in this tragedy. I imagine they are BOTH suffering greatly.

If this same scenario played out following a traffic stop of a drug dealer, NO ONE would be crying foul.

To be taken seriously.....

It would help to not attack the school system when you obviously didn't attend one (or if you did, pay any attention while you were there) so that you grew up to type such sentences as:
"do the scholl have medal protectors and how often do they use them? because there should be no students gettin in that scholl with no weapons".
Typing in all caps to express screaming such as Julia does, cussing at others as well as posting statements that slaughter the english language in every way possible, mis-spelling "school" and posting it on a news web site..... is it any wonder that the youth of today think that:
1) Education is not important and
2) Lashing out at others in immature and provocative ways is the way to handle problems and debate.
If "adults" like the two of you would focus more on your own behavior and examples that you provide in public then we wouldn't be debating whether an SRO should use a taser or a gun. He would then most likely need neither because the rest of us would have done our jobs of providing positive examples of how you should act in school, what the purpose for being there is, and how to handle problems without conflict, bad language, or violence.

Shoot to Kill...

The parents of this kid should have looked into their gene pool before having this kid. Since Aspergers Syndrome comes at birth! And he and his family have hide the behavioral issues and angry outbursts from everyone. It's obvious! To take away one knife and then turn your back on this kid to be knife again! In the BACK!! Shows intention all along. This officer not only saved his life, but others as well! Period.

D Pinter said it so eloquently

Posted by L Lee, Sunset Beach - Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 11:06 a.m.

to D Pinter: Thank you for putting it so eloquently! Officer Rhodes is a honorable and respected man, who would NEVER had discharged his weapon unless he felt an immediate threat to himself or others. This man has been in this position for 10 years, he has NEVER discharged his weapon before nor harmed a student. Common sense tells us the shot to the chest was the shot that stopped the student, the 4 shots prior did nothing to deter the child from his tirade. Those of you who believe Officer Rhodes should have done more, what more could he have done? How was he to disarm a knife weilding student? By being slashed/stabbed more? Was he to surrender his own life for the sake of the student, who may have stabbed other victims? My prayers go out to the parents of the student - your loss is tragic; but, the loss of this officer at the hands of your son would have been unconscionable.

Ignorant people

Posted by PEN 15, Florence - Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 11:26 a.m.

No wonder there are so many stupid kids these days. Look at some of the comments their parents are making. The reason the officer is out of the hospital is because he was able to shoot and defend himself. What was he supposed to do, wait until he was mortally wounded then defend himself? The reason that SRO officers carry weapons is to protect the people at school. What if someone came onto campus with a gun, what is the SRO supposed to do, use a taser? Some of you have no clue. Now I understand what is wrong with some of todays stupid kids. They get it honest.

everyone has their opinions

Posted by s t, myrtle beach - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 10:14 p.m.

To all you "should of used a taser" people out there. Officer Rhodes shot him 4 times before firing the 5th one that hit his chest and killed him. Honestly think about it. If 4 shots to ur body don't stop you what do you think a taser would do????? To everyone who says "well it was only a knife" i guess we will be seeing your kids real soon on "breaking news" next.

Officer Rhodes

Posted by Brian Cummings, Conway - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 7:31 p.m.

Officer Rhodes was in the right and the boy in the wrong. He didnt go to school that moring thinking that he was going to shot a child, it was the boys fault and not the officers. All of yall that think Rhodes is a hateful man and that he didnt have any right to shot the kid well yall are wrong he had every right to protect himself and the way that he reacted to was to shot him. This is to Julie, i believe if you are in your right mind which you must not be, that you would have shot someone that was stabbing you and trying to kill you and if the boy wouldnt have done what he did he woul;d have been in his cozy home also. Then for the person who was the Parent of CFHS Graduate, need to go back and meet rhodes again and maybe this time try not to cause trouble at the school and meet him in a nice time rather than probably what you did wich was cause trouble and you would see that he is a nice guy. I knew officer Rhodes personally and he was a nice guy to be around and would help in one that needed it.

Seems to me this was staged

Posted by Sumar Neparthatilas, New York - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 6:36 p.m.

If this kid is as smart as they say, then this was not murder but suicide by proxy.

I would ask myself if he left behind some sort of note or if he was not happy with his life.

The policeman really has no blame attached to him, he had to assume this was some kid on a rampage out to kill everyone. It's his job to be suspicious and paranoid and do what he can to stop breach of law, yes it is a tragedy that he shot the kid in a vital spot but it was the right thing to do

What Do You Really Know

Posted by Beezer B, NMB - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 3:23 p.m.

I've read a lot of posts here about this tragedy, and I'm really appalled at a lot of stuff that I am reading. I knew Trevor and know his parents, and I must say, this boy was raised in a very loving and caring enviroment. Yes, Trevor did have autisim, his parents sought out all available treatments and methods for helping him that they could find. Trevor had a dream for his future, to go to college and make something of himself, what happened was most assuredly was not in his planned future. It is so easy for you armchair quaterbacks to sit back and judge Trevor and his parents, but you people didn't know him, you don't know his parents. No one single soul making comments on this list knows what happened at school to cause this, all that I know is that a bright kid is dead and an officer of the law will now have to deal with this for the rest of his life. I don't blame the officer for defending his life at all, what are you supposed to do when somebody is stabbing you, but I don't know why the officer was carrying a gun and not some other method that would not have been deadly, maybe a taser or something else, something that would have stopped Trevor from stabbing him besides having to shoot Trevor. Until we know all of the facts, everything on here is just speculation.

Ask yourself what would you do if someone was to start stabbing you ? I will tell you. you will do anything to survive those few moments that will unfold so fast that you do not have time to think but to only react. This officer was only trying to survive . He did what any one would do . His survival instincs kicked in and thats what he did , he survived
I have been there , untill you have been in that type of situation you have no idea what you will do.I say good job officer. you didn't ask for this, but you did had to deal with it when it came to you.

For all you inept patrons of this ignorant idealistic fantasy: I hope that you are one day stabbed to death of your own free will for being this passionate about your care for human life.

If that imbecile would have as much stabbed my pinky toe, I would have fired indiscriminately like any officer of the law is trained to do when their life is on the line.

Keep your subjectivity away from your fingertips and leave the fact-finding up to the police to decide whose in fault.

i think it's sad

Posted by t h, conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 9:48 p.m.

i think it's sad everyone sitting here arguing when it clearly stated that there was no witnesses so no one knows what happened.how can any of you say he was stabbed from the back and then the front when you wasn't there?because officer rhodes said so?if it didn't really happen the way rhodes said it did i guess i would lie to if my job and life was on the line.my heart goes out to the parents and the family of this child that was killed it could have been handled in a different way if someone was properly trained before taking on the job.look how tiny this kid is and i have seen rhodes he could have used other means then a gun.and how many times was this child shot?you know once in the arm or the leg to put the fear of god in him until backup arrived should have been enough...he had a knife not a machine gun

coroner says a South Carolina police officer shot and killed a 16-year-old student who stabbed him at a high school.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge says Trevor Varinecz died of multiple gun shot wounds Friday.

Authorities said Varinecz pulled a knife and fought briefly with an officer as school started Friday morning at Carolina Forest High School in Conway.

Horry County schools spokeswoman Teal Britton said the boy asked to speak to the officer. She says the teen stabbed the officer after the two went into an office.

he wasn't behind a door...and aren't there supposed to be cameras in the schools?and if it was my child i would def. be looking into this.
i have heard many complaints since i have been in sc from students and parents about the officer.i'm not saying the kid didn't need to be punished for what he dead.but should death have really been the punishment?

kid shot at cfhs

Posted by t h, conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 9:02 p.m.

i just think it's crazy that the officer had enough time to pull a gun and shoot the kid when he could have took the same amount of time to use a taser...everyone says the officer was stabbed in the back but still had enough time to pull a gun.he was just a child and the officer was a grown man and was supposed to be trained for situations like this.i wasn't there so i don't know how it went down but it makes me think more and more about home schooling my kids...and as far as e1 ragging on julia or julie whatever her name is....none of you was there it stated in the news that there was no witnesses.so don't act like u knew what happened..give her a break shes just as confused about it as everyone else

We would not be talking about the events that took place today if the bone headed kid left his knife at home...Looks like he went to school this morning looking for trouble and found it.

People think!

Posted by Concerned Parent, South Carolina - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8:55 p.m.

This is a terrible incident that happened and we always want to put the blame on the schools, the officer, the metal detectors so on and so on. We always want to blame someone else other than ourselves. These kind of things are happening everyday whether in school or on the street. Parents need to be more involved in what is going on daily with there children. We allow are kids to play violent games watch violent stuff on TV and then we wonder why they do violent things. Now lets think about it like this a police officer at school hmm I know we didn't have them at my high school when I was a teenager. But now we do why because this seems to be a ongoing problem so what is the job of a police officer to protect the students of the school. We don't know what exactly happened and we don't know all of the details. I pray for the family of officer Rhodes and for the teenager who died. It is very unfortuanate that these things continue to happen what are we going to do about it for the future. Personally I know Officer Rhodes and I know that he does and excellent job at protecting the students of the high school and he doesn't tolerate this kind of behavior. We need to stop judging and we need to seriously be thinking about what would you do if you were in the same situation. I beleive that if you truly sit and think honestly about everything you will feel differently about this situation and would be wanting to do whatever you could to get involved and be supportive to your child and the school and officers who protect your kids at school so these things don't continue to happen. Everyone needs to be praying for these families and all families with children and all schools including CFHS.

It's a Tragedy

Posted by D Pinter, Myrtle Beach - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 7:09 p.m.

My condolences to the innocent, unsuspecting students and staff of Carolina Forest HS for the tragic invasion of their privacy this morning. My heart goes out to all of you. My heartfelt sympathy to the family of the young man involved. My utmost prayers and concern for Officer Marcus Rhodes for the torture he endured this morning and will continue to endure as he comes to terms with the ramifications of acting in the line of duty of a law officer. This tragedy is simply that - a tragedy!! It's not a time to point fingers of accusation when none of us knows the minds of either of the folks involved. Apparently, the young man was upset enough about something that he thought Officer Rhodes should "pay for it" and he came to school with a knife on him prepared for that to happen. Once the stabbing of Officer Rhodes began, Marcus had no human choice but to defend his body from further stabs by someone out to hurt him. He had to resort to police training and shoot. With the stabber right there on him, the gun had to go off at close range. We all know the outcome of a shooting at close range. It is never good. But what choice did the man have? Officer Rhodes is a humble, composed man of law. There is no way he would ever pull a gun on a student unless he had a very good reason to do so. Through the years that I've known Officer Rhodes, I've seen him in multiple situations with students and the public. Never once did I question his character or his reasons for making the decisions he has. The things I've learned about Officer Rhodes' beliefs about his job and the students he protects is that as long as respect is shown to the authorities at the school, respect is there for each other and for his position as an officer of the law, then there is no problem. Officer Rhodes would go out of his way to help the students before he would harm them in any way. He may have to make them see the consequences of their actions in order to help them, but he would help them nonetheless. Realizing that defending his life has caused the untimely death of a student he was there to protect is going to be very hard on Officer Rhodes to come to terms with. For those of you who are so quick to accuse him, maybe you should stop and breathe, and appreciate the fact that there are men (and women) out there who really do care for people and do a tremendous job in trying to keep our children safe in these war zones called schools. Instead of accusing everybody else, maybe we all need to find out a little something about what makes men like Officer Rhodes who they are. Maybe we need to search ourselves for once and ask for forgiveness for our sins of omission in not being the parents we should be to our children because we are so interested in what's good for "ME" and letting them raise themselves, and praying for the sins of commission for doing things that we know do not benefit our children, and teach them how to live in this crazy world. The overall blame falls on all of us, guys!

To many young kids dieing...

Posted by Patricia Crowe, Conway, Sc - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

My opinion on the situation is the officer was useing self defense in the situation...but why would he have to shoot and kill a young 16 yr old boy...I dont think it would have taken numerous shots for the boy to fall to the ground or drop his weapon.I think one shot could have made him fall...but never would have killed him and then he would have been able to face adult charges and go to jail for his actions. I just think to many young kids are dieing before they even making it out of school.

The facts first

Posted by Ellen Smith, conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 6:16 p.m.

First we need all the facts, before anybody says anything more.
1, how many shots were fired?
2, how many times did the student stab him?
3, how big was the knife?
there is many things to think about before anybody say anything.

What about the other students

Julia, i'm sorry to say this, but you really are stupid! I'm pretty positive I would've done the same thing Officer Rhodes did if I was in that situation. He does a great job trying to keep this campus safe; I honestly can't believe you would sit here and take trevors side, he was in the wrong, and you're turning it all around to make it sound like Officer Rhodes is the criminal. WRONG!!!!! Were you there when it happened? no! because that idiot stabbed Rhodes in the back! and the front when he turned around, so he shot him. He tried to stab rhodes again, so he shot him once again. He was trying to defend not only himself, but the school from that psycho. If Officer Rhodes didn't do what he did then, trevor could've killed someone in the hallways! Now, you tell me who was in the wrong you stupid idiot!

Yes, you are truly one of the ignorant (that is obvious from the way you write). Officer discharged

Posted by T L, conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 5:21 p.m.

Yes officer Rhodes did shoot this child because he stabbed him but was he really hurt to the point that he had to shoot this child with deadly force? Could he not restrain him without fatally shooting him. My son has attended CF schools since elem. school and once again another tragedy but now we have to worry about if our children are safe going to school. Officer Rhodes has been discharged from the hospital home so he does not have deadly injuries. The 16yr male has not. Now his parents must live with what has happened for the rest of their lives and bury their son. He was not a big boy and obviously has some problems that needed to be addressed. Now why did it come to this? This act of violence is a tragedy and I pray that the family of the child and Officer Rhodes are able to get through this.

Student Behavior

Posted by Vera Langston, Little River - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 5:08 p.m.

Officer Rhodes had to protect himself and the school. The people who feel that he was in the wrong, need to WAKE UP and realize that kids are not as innocent as they think. I quit a job I loved as a teacher in Horry County partly because I got tired of being physically and verbally abused by elementary school children. As for Marcus Rhodes, he gives everything to his job and was an excellent SRO in the NMB schools. My heart goes out to the parents of the student. No matter what, we should keep our "cool" because we are examples to our children and others.

GET EDUCATED

Posted by NO WAY, MBSC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 5:01 p.m.

I feel I must comment on this. First of all law enforcement officers are trained to use what ever force that is necessary to eliminate the threat. A KNIFE is a DEADLY weapon. A TASER is not. The officer involved obviously used the force that was necessary. As stated before, he was stabbed several times PRIOR to shooting this person. Had the student used physical force to attack the officer I am sure that the officer would have used the force neccesary to restrain him... such as physical force, mace or a taser. I proat for the students family (I will not call him a victim)but I also pray for Officer Rhodes, I am sure he has physical wounds as well as emotional wounds that will take time to heal. The only victims here are the officer, students and faculty that have been directly involved. Prior to making ignorant statements against others and their professional training get educated.

Officer Rhodes is a hero!

Posted by Parent AND teacher, myrtle beach, sc - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 4:59 p.m.

As a teacher in one of CFHS's feeding schools, and the parent of a CFHS student, I commend Officer Rhodes for the way he handled this most unfortunate situation. First, a 16-year old boy is NOT a baby. I teach 13-yr.olds and most of the boys are much bigger than I am. Second, Officer Rhodes took about 8 hits before he fired. Obviously, a last resort.

A boy that comes to school with a knife, hides behind a door, and attacks and stabs EIGHT times is out to kill. Had he been successful, that would have constituted PREMEDITATED MURDER!

THANKFULLY,TREVOR CHOSE TO ATTACK THE ONLY PERSON ON CAMPUS WHO COULD DEFEND HIMSELF PROPERLY, AND NOT A FELLOW STUDENT, TEACHER, OR STAFF MEMBER!!!!

Officer Rhodes has a tremendous responsibility at CFHS and has zero tolerance when it comes to the safety of our children. Maybe that is why some people don't like him...HE DOES HIS JOB AND DOES IT WELL, and he doesn't put up with any crap!! I have the utmost respect for him and, while my heart goes out to Trevor's family for their loss, I am very, very thankful that Officer Rhodes is okay.

Any decent parent will look at the bigger picture and agree with me. The other ridiculous comments come from the IGNORANT and uninformed. You have the education community's support, Officer Rhodes, I am sure of that!

No one knows the reason this happened today. That will be sorted out with time..For the previous individual to question Officer Rhodes character is beyond belief. He has a job to do and does it well both on and off duty. I would say if these parents were more accountable to having young people go to school to learn and follow the rules, would that not have had an impact on any of this...who knows. Don't throw stones, this officer was stabbed, he did what he is suppose to do in the order he was suppose to do it. How about praying for all concerned and hope there is an answer to puzzling situation..not criticizing someone for protecting themselves, faculty and students.

It's the kids fault...not the officers! He was doing his job. Which is protecting the rest of the students. If he didn't have a gun he would have went down without a fight, and the kid probably would have went on a rampage just like that of Virginia Tech or Colombine. The soccer moms out there who defend the kid or have disrespect towards the officer are absolutely ignorant. If it weren't for him it could have ended a lot worse. Frankly, one person got killed and it was his own actions that led to this. He knew what he was doing, and he knew that it was wrong. I feel bad for his parents, but have regret towards the violence our youngster develop at such an early age.

Number 1. There is not a single person that has commented that actually knows what happened. How are you people certain the cop was being stabbed with a knife? What if it were a pencil? Know the facts before you start ranting and raving. This is the world we live in. Things like this are what happened. Who is to say what is right and wrong? What happened was a tragedy. But why get your selves worked up over someone you probably don't know. There is no one on this earth who can control the things that take place except the people involved. If they can't control them selves then who can? It's whats going to happen. Until people can learn to be civil with each other, things of this nature are going to happen. No sense in yelling at each other about other's mistakes. That's just plain silly.

Have you personally met Officer Rhodes?

Posted by Parent of CFHS Graduate, Carolina Forest - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 4:09 p.m.

Being a parent of a graduate of CFHS, I have personally met Officer Rhodes.... his ego, personality, attitude and actions towards "his job" caused a verbal confrontation with myself and other parents. If we (the parents) would have filed a petition and joined together to get him investigated before now, the child he shot may be alive today!....

When I was a student in Horry County Schools, the first thing happen before class was a moment of silence ( bow your heads and say a prayer to start your day in school) and now it's moments in violence in our schools. Prayer should be brought back into our Schools so parents wouldn't be worried about their children these days because guns and knvies and violence is not the answer to a educating our students and preparing them for a future. Horry County please vote to put prayer back into our schools before its to late because the citizens of Horry County don't want another accident like this to happen in our schools or just like the violence in Chicago school when a 16 year old was killed to death. We all need to wake up and smell the breath of God that has given us life to live when the Bible says, everything that has breath praise ye the Lord.

Julia-put the blame where it belongs

Posted by Jane Dow, Myrtle Beach, SC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 4:06 p.m.

Julia,
People like you are the reason that "little babies" end up killing people. It sounds to me that you don't think this child is reponsible for his own actions and that everyone else it to blame. If you don't ever teach children about consequences then they will have nothing to fear and nothing to lose. Have you thought about the fact that the kid could have taken the Resouce officers gun, after stabbing him to death. He could have taken his gun and gone on a shooting spree around the school. Who would you blame for that? Schools house all kinds of children from all walks of life and some kids don't care whether they live or die and will kill. Fact! The school system does the best they can do to teach children about values and respect and life, but it starts at home and honestly the home life is more influential than the school life. You should not judge this officer' actions....it is not your place to judge and you don't even have the whole story. I am glad to see that most people on this site agree with my mentality and not yours.

First off none of this would have ever hapened if the school resource officer was carrying a weapon. Second off there is no justifyable reason that this young man had to die. Any officer that is to decrepid to handle a 17 year olde boy in a high school setting shouldn't be the resource officer. Third off what type of training do school resource officers really have in preventing situations like this. Apparently none. This situation was caused by ignorance on the school district and a poorly trained police officer. While the boy may have initiated the attack, there is no reason that his life had to end. While the boy did initate this attack, there was no reason for shots to be fired. My prayers are with this young man and as for the officer learn to do your job and protect the public or get a new one.

This police officer should have been able to defend himself without the use of deadly force. No one, not even police officers should be allowed to carry weapons on school grounds. If the officer had not had the gun, no one would have died. The school system needs to review its use of police officers on public school campuses.

Julia, do you think you could handle a 10 year old? now do you think you could handle a 10 year old while you are being stabbed? this wasn't a fight between this kid and the officer where they squared off and went at it. i assume he was not expecting this punk to try and kill him with a deadly weapon when he came to see him. you can't possibly find it feasible that the officer should have been able to brush this off and just be able hold the kid down after being stabbed. I don't like cops, i never have and i never will; but i have no problem with how this was handled. i would be more upset if our tax dollars would have had to go into keeping this kid alive in prison(where he probably would have been free in a year or two)

Blame the perpetrator

Posted by Sandra Martin, Murrels Inlet,SC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 3:41 p.m.

Regardless of the fact he was a juvinile. He attacked a Officer of the law.
Maybe the family should have "seen" he had problems. And addressed those way before this final act.
As a former Correctional Supervisor from a big city, I saw these "children" first hand.As did my husband a retired "homicide Detective" Too often the rage is placed on the wrong person, by those that have little knowledge.
These parents should feel blessed this kid, picked on someone who could and would fight back, therefore probably saving the life of their child.
Than God for an Officer that did his job, well.

Some of you folks need to realize something!

Posted by Jim Mayberry, Carolina Forrest - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 3:40 p.m.

First, The child entered into the office and stabbed an officer! My kid and his friends are telling me multible times or attempts. If I was an officewr, I would view this as a attempt on my life and others, and act appropriately! In this instance, with a child lunging at you with a large knife, I ask you, where do you have the time to pull out a taser, engage it, and shoot it? Then I ask you this,Do you actually know the whole story yet? I'll answer that, no you don't so don't cast judgement on an officer who was obviously doing what I pay him to do as a job, and that is protect my child!!! Get off your over protective, don't ever spank your child way of thinking and put some thought into the situation!

First of all these cops were "trained" with other ways of handling themselves as well as others and further more when you are on a website with thousands of people reading please refrain from bumkin remarks! I hope you have children and when you go home tonight you can not hear, smell, feel, or touch your child! b/c you will feel what this BABY'S family is going to feel!!! THE DAMN COP WAS WRONG AND HE SHOULD LOSE HIS JOB AND PENSION IT WAS VERY UN-CALLED FOR!! IF YOU CAN NOT HANDLE A 16 YEAR OLD THEN YOU NEED TO RETIRE!!! THE COP NEEDS TO ANALYZE HIS ACTIONS B/C HE MADE THIS BABY BOY VERY ANGRY!!!! THE COP NEEDS TO GO THROUGH POLICE ACADEMY AGAIN AND I DO NOT MEAN GO TO BLOCKBUSTER AND RENT THE MOVIE B/C HE MISSED THE LESSON ON HOW TO FEFRAME FROM UNNECESSARY BRUT FORCE!! HE IS IN THE WRONG!! SCHOOLS TODAY ARE NASTY, HATEFUL, AND DOWN RIGHT OUT AWFUL BUT, IT'S BECAUSE OF THE BEAU TRASH RUNNING HORRY COUNTY! IF YOU KEEP "BULLYING" AND KEEP REFRAINING PEOPLE B/C YOU THINK YOUR ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY THEN HELL YEAH YOU DESERVE WHAT YOU GET!!! I HOPE THIS COP LEARNS A VALUABLE LESSON AND I HOPE EVERYONE LEARNS TO BE THERE MORE FOR THEIR KIDS INSTEAD OF PUSHING MONEY ON THEM, PUSHING THEM ON THE COMPUTER, AND SET DOWN AND TALK WITH THESE BABIES B/C PARENTS ARE HORRIBLE THIS DAY AND TIME! LEAVE THE BOOZE, POT, CRACK, COKE, OXY, XANIES, PRINCE VAL, AND WHATEVER YOUR CHOICE OF POSION IS ALONE AND BE WITH YOUR KIDS!!!

BABIES?

Posted by John Beam, Myrtle Beach - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 3:20 p.m.

SCROLL DOWN....read Julia's comment. This mentality is exactly why things like this happen. Some people have this baby mentality, nurture, nurture, nurture. NEWS FLASH this boy was 16 years old, old enough to drive, get a full-yime job, get married (in SC)and have his own "babies". We make excuses and forget to teach our children that there are consequences that arrise from our decisions. Parents call the school board when their kid gets cut from an athletic team, complain to teachers when their kid gets an F for doing absolutely nothing to further THEIR education, and mommy and daddy blame everyone else for their "BABIES" failure. Well, Julia, this is REAL life, in the REAL world, with REAL choices, that reap REAL consequences. It is nobody elses responsibility to raise and take care of anyone elses kid. Schools provide education, we are priviledged to receive their services, they try to make it as safe as possible, but they cannot predict human nature. This young man made a violent, FELONY decision, and he reaped the consequences. Maybe he should have "watched more CSI" then he could have seen this coming. Officer Rhodes has done everything he can to take care of the students at CFHS (as well as many other civic causes), he is one man, I feel safer knowing that he is there and that students like this never will be again. If you fault his actions, ponder this.....would you get in an argument with a cop, pull a knife on the officer, stab him and expect to walk away? If you answered yes...YOUR a baby and I wish you would go and try. Smarten Up!!!!!!

GESH This 'baby boy' who is also a FRIEND of my daughters, CONTINUOUSLY stabbed the SRO! Lets see, if you were being stabbed, would you softly state "ok baby boy thats a no no! Could you possibly stop stabbing me and go to time out?" This kid knew what he was doing, he continued doing it, and just as when you pick up a glass with water in it and turn it over, YOU KNOW something will happen! COME ON! yes I've heard first hand how 'good' this YOUNG ADULT was, and how there are other options that could have been taken, but anyone who has EVER been in an EMERGENCY situation or Life threatening situation knows, YOU TAKE THE FIRST OPTION TO SAVE AND PROTECT from the source (here the stabbing) Please get a freaking grip! This is a tragic situation, yes it is a terrible thing when anyone dies, 18 over or under! But when you stab someone, threaten their life, do not expect them to just sit there and go 'okies have fun!'
You wouldnt!
This is sad, my heart goes out to the parents and the officer, but the reality is this young adult was in control of his actions which caused a reaction ultimately resulting in todays events. The true issue here is why werent the detectors on? Let me guess, Obama wants to cut on spending? What a cut, literally.

Non- Lethal Weapons

Posted by Dale Lefler, MBSC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 3:16 p.m.

Police or resource officers should not be allowed to carry firearms inside our schools either, they have non-lethal weapons at their disposal and that's what they should use.

I graduated many years ago from CFHS and while I was there, I held great respect for Officer Rhodes. This is a man who has a heart for working with teens, not just some random "Rent-A-Cop", as many people have speculated. Without a doubt, I know that he did this out of fear for his life. There's no way that he would EVER use a gun on a student if he had another option. He is loved and respected by all the in the CFHS community and I know that they will all stand behind him duing this trying time.

How can you criticize this officer when it was the BABY going in trying to kill him??? you are a freaking idiot! Personally if he was grown enough and man enough to take another person's life then hell yeah he should have been shot. And personally i think it's fortunate because I live at the beach so this means there's one less hoodlum on the streets putting me in danger! Obviously you don't have children because if so I think you would understand this. And if you do then it's sad that you would defend some crazy child over the safety of your own children, because keep in mind that this could have easily been a child that had pissed him off and he could have stabbed them... Which makes me question what kind of education do you have? You would making a joke of the "rent-a-cop" situation.. He is a certified cop lady. Now for your own good, shut up, because you have just really insulted your own intelligence!

cell phones

Posted by Pathetic Kids, South Carolina - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 2:47 p.m.

i agree that cell phones would have been helpful for the kids to contact their parents, but you can't blame the teachers for not allowing them. if students carried the cell phones strictly for emergency purposes this wouldn't be an issue. if you parents out there try to justify buying cell phones for your kids in case of an emergency, then there are phones that you can program to only be able to call a few numbers. don't hand them unlimited plans and be stupid enough to expect them to be responsible. the reason cell phones are not allowed is because students talk and text to their friends all day, every day, during class...something tells me emergencies aren't happening that often. i'm less than a decade removed from high school so you can't really call me an old fart just yet, but students should not be allowed to carry cell phones in school...period.

CFHS Incident

Posted by Police Officer's Son A, Conway, SC - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 2:33 p.m.

First off I would like to send my heart felt sympathy to the Family who lost their son in this unfortunate incident. However, think about what this Horry County Police School Resource Officer has to live with the rest of his life. He works inside the School to keep ALL of the Children safe from something like this occurring. This would be the last thing that the SRO would want to go through (Having to shoot one of the Children that he is there to protect from violence ever day). I am a Retired Police Officer's Son and I have seen first hand what Police Officers go through to protect citizens from violent crimes. Police Officers are trained to only fire their weapon as a very last resort and or when it comes down to a life threatening situation where the officer has exahausted all other means. My Father had to investigate the shooting of two police officers where one was killed in the line of duty. This was the last thing my father would ever wanted to do. I know this is going to be tramatic to the SRO who was stabbed, he is going to have a long journey recovering physically, but especially mentally & emotionally. Good Luck to the Officer and also to the family of the student. God Bless.

cell phones in an emergency situation

Posted by parent of student @CFHS, conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 2:20 p.m.

I have to agree about the cell phone issue, What I saw was mayhem of parents wanting to know why their students were not allowed to contact them. That is why they have cell phones in the first place, incase of an emergency. My student told me they were told to shut them of in case the lock down was because of a bomb, when it was known it was not in fact that kind of threat they should have been allowed to notify their parent of their safety. Hope the SRO makes a speedy recovery, he was just doing his job.

I hope that whatever the truth is that it will come out. I just want to say that I have been an SRO for the last 15 years at Darlington High school. This is something that we as SRO's face each and every day. What if this happens in my school? We have a duty to the public and the school to keep the school safe for students to learn. But as I always say we need the help of parents to teach their kids. In this day and time they are learning but the wrong way. It's time to take our kids back from the streets and the wrong way of living.

The student lashed out and if reports are correct, he stabbed Officer Rhodes several times. Sounds like Officer Rhodes was trying to NOT shoot this kid and ended up with no alternative And, as for these "babies", (as you called them) they aren't babies at all. How about you take a few of them into your home and workplace and see if you don't have problems?! Your comment shows your idiocy.....I'm surprised you even know how to operate a computer.

Really people! First if all, I think that the officer was right in shooting the kid, but seriously, have y'all seen our campus? It's the only open campus around here (and it has actually been rated the safest school in horry county). It is impossible to stop everyone with metal detectors (which, by the way, I have never been through.........ever). We have seven hallways with classrooms, a very long main building that is not conneced through the inside in every section, and we also have six more buildings with over twelve different classrooms in them. Y'all see what I'm getting at? IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to use these metal detectors propperly because it is impossible to have that many detectors and entrances. Even at schools that are not open campus, like Black Water Middle School, they have so many doors on them that I'm sure most of you have no idea about. Even if they are locked, it's not like they are bullet-proof and it's not like the killer can find another way in. I'm just saying. It serves no purpose to waste so much money on something that is worthless in the first place. Maybe we should spend that money on some new freakin' teachers at CFHS that won't take away your cell phone while you are contacting your parents to tell them that you are okay and they should pick you up.
Let's get our priorities straight first.
Let's get our stories straight before we start blaming the law enforcement on everything.

Really THINK about it if this kid had the balls to stab a police officer who else would he have stabbed this kid had no intention of letting that officer live he was there on a mission to kill. i understand the parents are upset but the kid stabbed and OFFICER your not going to get a good outcome anwyas....

teaching your child

Posted by Erion Douds, Darlington - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 1:41 p.m.

OK here is how I see it: As a parent I would be devastated that I lost my son. However if I truly cared about him I would have raised him with respect and taught him that volience is not the answer. He would have known that taking a knife to school was wrong and if there was a problem he could have came to me and I would have handled whatever the issue was with the officer, so he would not have had to take matters into his own hands. I think "we" (meaning everyone) as parents are responsible for how we raise our kids. "We" need to take a stand and bring God and disipline back into the schools.
Now as for the officer: I feel he was in the right because this child took this knife to school with the intent of using it, and had the guts to even request to go see the officer. As the officer, I do think that before it got to the point the "Child" thought he had to stab me, if there were time, I would have tired to eliminate him from stabbing me. But Trust and Believe if I were the one getting stabbed I would have done the same thing.

Lets wake up people. Teach our children it is about loving each other, not killing who ever gets in your way.

We don't know all the details yet...

Let's not forget this "baby" is reported to have stabbed a School Resource Officer multiple times. All SROs are county or city police officers, not "rent-a-cops".

A full investigation will take place and there's no reason to rush to judge until we have all the details regarding what took place.

Posted by Grandmother Concerned, West Virginia - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 1:22 p.m.

My granddaughter goes to that school. If what she has to say is correct, the teen stabbed the officer 7 times before the officer shot him. Sounds like the teen was on a mission to hurt at least one person, if not several. If the officer had not done something to stop him, then it could have been a lot worse, with students, teachers, .. hurt. It is terrible that a teen was killed, but it does sound like he came to school with a knife and was using it against at least one person. If he had not been stopped, where would this story have been?

I was close to Officer Rhodes when i attended CFHS. He is a very humble man and cares very much about the students and always did his best to help the students out. He is a great man and i hope everyone can see that. He acted in a way to protect his life. Yes people may say what if it was your child and this and that, yes if it was my child i would be broken hearted and be trying to find blame. But as a duty of an officer they have to do whatever it takes to protect their lives. He felt that his life was in danger and acted like any other officer would have done. Im sorry for the family of the child and my prayers go out to them. But please understand that Officer Rhodes would not have wanted this to happen.

I'm just at shock right now about all of this and it makes me think about my own son and of course it makes every parent think about their own kids. This time and day the world is getting bad and it's not like when in the 40's and 50's. When you send the kids to school and they would come home with new ideals and a smile on their face. Now the kids come home and all they want to do is not have any thing to say about school.Learning should be fun and and want the kids to learn more about things.School theses days is all about how to test the kids more and make them learn more. It's not the teachers or the school Board fault it's the parents fault for giving people this much power over our kids and not listening to our kids when they say I need a break. Our kids are not robots. There are a lot of pressure with kids these days and we are the adults and we need to help them. The officer was doing his duty and his job and I know this was hard on him when he had to do this. The boy did wrong and why I'm saying this because the kids know the rules about not bring weapons to school and this includes knifes. All I can do is pray for the family who lost their son and for the officer and his family. When you get in high school you know right from wrong and when you make that choice then it's all on you to do the right thing and not the wrong thing.

I see a lot of calls for lesser force. However, police are specifically trained on when and how to use deadly force. With the information available right now, the officer (certified police officer and not a "rent-a-cop") handled the situation EXACTLY the way he was trained. You DO NOT respond to a stabbing with a taser. If people are concerned with how officers are trained, then contact your representatives and make them change the policy. Do not fault the wounded officer for responding EXACTLY as trained.

I do not understand why some people are calling this 16yr a "child", he came to school today with the intent of hurting and killing...... The officer was stabbed repeatedly. What may I ask do you think he was to do?? That "child" had the intent to kill.. Let me ask you this, you have a 16yr old stabbing you repatedly, what would you do? Defend yourself or just lay down and continue to be stabbed......
Also, it would help if the news would report the whole story and not just pieces.
If the "child" was tazed, people would be in an uproar about that......

How can you defend this kid?

maybe the officer should have blown a whistle or something while this 16 year old "child" was trying to kill him. he asked to go see the officer and went there with a knife (or whatever he used)...that's premeditated. if you wanna try to blame someone other than the kid and his family, try blaming the school system for not making him smart enough to realize you shouldn't bring a knife to a gun fight.

I don't understand some of these comments. This kid stabbed the officer multiple times and some of you are blaming the officer? This officer may have very well saved other lives today! WAKE UP!!!

altercation at CFHS

I went to pick up my child today after this sad incident and while at the school asked about metal detectors. I was told they are not always turned on.! HELLO and all schools need them TURNED on all day not just whenever willy nilly. As for the Sro I feel he as an officer is trained to stop an attacker by shooting to hurt and stun NOT KILL! I feel bad for the parents of the student and the family of the officert . This would not have happend if the metal detectors were ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sled has not completed their investigation and already people with these bitter behind attitudes have begun with praising an officer for killing a STUDENT. What if this was your child would you think the same? SOME parents cant control their kids actions at all times. Its obvious that this thing is going to get big and I'm sure SLED will conduct a strict investigation...just because of the public and the way this could escalate. I truly hate it for both sides because I'm sure the officer will not get off this as easy as Some people think he should. So instead of having a one track mind put yourself in both positions because both Victims played part in decision that could have been avoided.

We have just lost another baby and it is really sad!! What in the world did this rent-a-cop do or SAY to this baby?? It must have been really bad! I hope this cop lives w/ this forever! and next time he speaks he speaks with moral values and not some fresh A#@h*(* that watched CSI from the night before! These cops are horrible! I know b/c my baby attends my high school (Socastee High class of 91) and the babies are hateful BUT!!!! The parents and the Horry County Cops and School Systems make them that way!! I would hate to have this babies blood on my hands like this cop does as well as the school system!!

It is commended that the Officer was able to confront the situation BUT I agree what about a Tazer?? Killing any-one is a terrible thing even if it is with a good reason! I am sure this officer is not happy at all with the outcome of this. These are not 'Child'ren - They are almost MEN ! I can attest to this fact I have a son who was 6'3" @ 16 yrs. Parents every-where need to set better standards for their WHOLE Household instead of just thinking it's someone elses job!, and turning the other cheek. EAT Dinner together, HAVE Family Time, Discussions about the day and Their Lives!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

I am very sorry for ALL involved - A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY Happened Today!!

Lack of respect in todays youth

Posted by Michael Kocot, MB - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 12:35 p.m.

It's all about a lack of respect for elders, teachers, faculty and law enforcement. If the child brought a knife to school and used it with disregard for rules and total disrespect for the officer, he got what was coming.
Did his parents ever teach him RESPECT or did they say "be proud of who you are and don't let anyone tell you..."

murderers and attempted murderers do deserve to die. you don't repeatedly stab someone simply with the intention of hurting them a little bit. kudos to the officer and good riddance to the kid, he obviously wasn't doing any good for society.

I too am a worried parent! I just can't believe all the violence that goes on today in our schools and communities!!! I wish I could afford for my children to go to a private school or better yet to home-school. But the violence and hatred is everywhere! We can't hide from it. But it needs to stop! Teach responsibility and that your actions has a consequence!

I absolutly agree that some things would be prevented if parents were more involved in what goes on with their children. However, that was a child and being that he was an OFFICER of the LAW, somewhere in his training was there not a lesson on how to defend yourself WITHOUT killing someone. Just think, if it was your child, would you have wanted them to shoot him to kill him? The resolution to this matter did not have to be the DEATH OF A 16 YEAR OLD BOY.

VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS

Posted by L R, MYRTLE BEACH - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 12:21 p.m.

YEARS AGO ALL KIDS HAD TO WORRY ABOUT IN SCHOOL WAS MEASLES, NOW ITS VIOLENCE PARENTS HAVE TO RISE UP AND DO SOMETHING. REMEMBER THE STABBIBG A FEW YEARS BACK NOW THIS, HOW ARE STUDENTS WALKING AROUND WITH WEAPONS NO METAL DETECTORS NO THROUGH SEARCHES, DONT WORRY ABOUT THE CELL PHONES PLEASE... AT LEAST I KNEW MY SON WAS OK. NEED MORE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS, MAYBE INVOLVE THE LOCAL SHERIFF DEPT OFF DUTY CORRECTION OFFICERS TO WORK SCHOOL GROUNDS, DO SEARCHES IN MORNING. THE STUDENTS WERE NOT PREPARED FOR THIS NO DRILLS, ONLY RANDOM DRUG AND WEAPON SEARCHES DONE SELDOMLY BY TEACHERS THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR. THE SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE CLOSED FOR THE DAY, THE STRESS FACTOR ALONE ON EVERYONE WAS ENOUGH. PARENTS PLEASE ANY FEEDBACK ON THIS, IT HAS TO END. I AM GLAD THE OFFICER IS OK

No one deserves to die.His family is mourning as Im sure the officer is too.I cannot believe anyone would say he got what he deserved. Are you kidding me?This is a tragedy.I have a son in Socastee High School and I hate the idea of him having to go to school because of the dangers.More parents need to be involved with their children and we all need to look at signs or that something could be wrong.College don't look like its gonna be any better. This was still a child and still a human being and someones son, brother, grandson, etc. He did not deserve to die.I am sorry for what happened to the officer but Im sure the officer would've liked a different outcome too.

This is unnecessary

Posted by Kayla Clark, south carolina - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 12:05 p.m.

Attending this school last year, I know first hand searching isn't as thorough as it should be. Concerns about the petty things such as our cell phones being on or if our shirt straps were off by 2 millimeters mattered most. You don't hear of other schools having these issues. Why? Well when they are given metal detectors no kid goes into the school until they walk through it. People, you have the resources and a brain, use them! I promise your lives will be a ton easier and with alot less drama. Today did not have to happen. Get it together, before something really bad does happen which could have been prevented.

Carolina Forest incident

I am sad that a life was lost this morning, but when are we going to wake up? I am sick of the violence in school. I have a 9 year old at Ocean Bay and I am terrified for her to go into middle and high school. I want to thank the officer for his bravery and had it not been for him, other lives may have been lost today. As parents, we need to make our kids accountable and responsible and take a stand to put an end to all of this violence.

Kids these days think they can do whatever they like and get away with it without consequence - A child entered a school and stabbed an OFFICER of the LAW - of course the officer would retaliate and he had every right to draw his weapon and use it if he felt his life was in danger.

The SRO did what he had to do to protect the other students and I commend him. If he did not stand up for the safety of the students or the faculty then people would be complaining that the SRO did not do his job after the student went on a suicide mission. Shall we all forget about Columbine???

School shooting

It is really sad to me that these kinds of things happen in schools. We better start raising our children by instilling morals and values in them.

How are you so sure that the 16 year old, 11th grade student is a "little boy"?? Just wondering....
I have children in middle and high school and I can tell you that I've been to the schools. Some of these children are not little! And I'm sure we will hear more on this story and the circumstances behind it! It sounds premeditated to me. He came to school armed with something to stab the officer with, asked to see him, and an altercation happened. Parents also need to step up and be parents, not friends to their children. We have the right to set rules and boundaries for our children, and enforce discipline when those are broken. We need to get the violence from teenagers under control!! Look what happened to the child in Florida. He was set on FIRE by 15 and 13 year olds! Children are not being taught that their actions have concequences. I seriously don't think anything is worth this kind of behavior. Kudos to the officer for doing his job and ensuring no other student or staff member was hurt!!

dangers

Posted by Don Cox, Conway - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 11:48 a.m.

Did the officier not carry a tazer, Looks kind of dangerous to carry and use a firearm in the shool bldg. How many walls could the round penetrate, and where would it stop?

what's going on?

Posted by Amanda Miller, carolina forest, sc - Friday, October 16, 2009 at 11:32 a.m.

I can't put into words how disappointed I am with whats going on in our schools. I have cousins in 11th grade at Carolina Forest High School, and a five year old who attends the elementary school. School is supposed to be a place for our children to get education and resources for them to be able to make something out of themselves once they enter the world on their own. Now a child has lost his life, because of violence. The officer at the school had no other way of containing a child without shooting him? Its understandable that the little boy had stabbed the officer, but is there no other way to resolve these suitations besides with violence?

Stupidity

that's why some of these kids shouldn't even be in school. If he really stabbed him, then he got what he deserved.

Why?

If you've gone to the school, and graduated (like i have might i add), then you know that this school is not dangerous. We have had our share of isolated incidents in the past, two or three at most while I was there. If you know what kind of area CF is, its not what you expect to be dangerous. I am a graduate and am now a pharmacy major, and my parents sent me there by choice over CHS. Not that I am hold Conway for having a bad reputation, but I have never been scared to go to school there. Metal detectors work, however there are ways around, and there are budget shortages, which is not news to anyone.

Something is always going down at carolina forest high school. I would be afraid to send my child there, knowing that anything like this could happen. Isnt this a prime reason that metal detectors should be used? I will keep the SRO and Student in my prayers, to make it through this.
