The Mayor of Atlantic Beach has been arrested for the second time in less than five months.

Mayor Retha Pierce is behind bars at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Around 1:00 Friday afternoon, Atlantic Beach Police say Mayor Pierce was driving on Highway 17 in the town when she side swiped a car. Authorities say both cars pulled over, a then passenger got out of Pierce's car, checked the damage, got back in the car, and that's when they say Pierce drove off.

Police say there were multiple witnesses that confirm it was Pierce driving the car.

The Mayor was arrested around 8 pm, Friday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and cited for having no proof of insurance.

A spokesman on Mayor Pierce's behalf says Pierce was the one that was hit and that the driver of the other car drove off before coming back.

NewsChannel 15 will be in Atlantic Beach Saturday to get more on this story.

Is everyone presiding over Horry County complete morons?? I think people should leave Mayor Pierce Alone. Maybe if Horry County, Myrtle Beach and all the other ignorant people in this area will let her do her job, Maybe they will see she can be a fine mayor. If you people can not see conspiracy all over her arrests you are completely blind!! Just because her views are not exactly what Myrtle Beach or Horrible Horry County wants or likes does not make her a criminal. The things I have been watching this county and neighboring city put her thru is obnoxious, I wish she would hire me as her body guard, She sure needs one. Let the women do her job and get out of her way. This area needs more people just like her in office, then, maybe just then, this town and county can make money the correct way, with hard work and effort. You guys can't sit on your butts and expect that tax to fill your pocket forever, especially when you are the ones killing your own area. Heck i refuse to shop in Horrible Horry County anymore, I go to Georgetown County like the other intelligent residents of the Grand Strand here!!! Then Myrtle Beach and Horry County has so many illegal, and idiot businesses who conduct business in the most unethical ways I have ever seen, and turn your blind eye to that, yet arrest a woman who is mayor trying to get into her own town hall. Remind me, but, does the mayor not preside over her own town hall?? HELLO!!!! Look around you IDIOTS in office and running things around here, people are leaving and the only jobs offered here are ridiculous online make money from home scams, where are the jobs, where are the residents going, as far away from here as they can that is where. Then the officials rebuttal to that is, AHHH lets raise taxes, yea that's the ticket, make all the tourists mad to so when the economy does pick back up they will still not return because of the high taxes. Where are your brains at? Not only are you killing us now, but you have killed any future for our children as well. You all better wake up or there will be no towns left for anyone to visit or tour to, except Atlantic Beach. You say she is the laughing stock of Myrtle Beach, I think it is Myrtle Beach and Horrible Horry County themselves being laughed at. GO MAYOR PIERCE.

Heritage

Posted by Nikki Allman, North Myrtle Beach - Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 5:03 p.m.

This community has a great heritage. There Gullah history goes back to 1938. I believe they have a lot of potential to make this community a great landmark instead of a place people avoid. I do not believe that NMB should take over because they will not hold the heritage of the community at hand. I believe they need someone in office that is there to better the community as a whole and not just focus on what is good for them. From what I see every year the runners are from one family or another. They are concerned about better things the way they see fit. Get the community involved in itself. Get someone in office that can push the city to its potential. I mean if need be I'll do it.

Godly Woman??

Posted by N S, Little River - Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 7:17 p.m.

What is it exactly that makes her Godly? Is it because she attends church, is that it? If you ask me it takes a whole lot more than that!! Sounds pretty typical to me. I tell you, I sure don't know too many good Christian people with an outstanding wrap sheet like that MORON!

for you haters

She was put in office and did things that almost all people with titles did GET IN trouble. but it was a comment made that i think was real racist. it doesn't matter what color white or black there is no excuse for what is going on. it doesn't matter what color you are. so for all you racist stupids grow up it's 2009. somewhere down the line you're mix with a nother race

Atlantic Beach should just be annexed into North Myrtle and end this ridiculous mess.

tighten it up lady!

Posted by tanesha livingston, popular - Sunday, April 12, 2009 at 9:21 a.m.

i don't understand it. this lady is supposed to be a role model for the community but is continuously in the spotlight for breaking the law. but on the other hand of course any little thing that happens legally in her life is gonna appear in the evening news so all i gotta say is tighten it up lady...and as for the person who said she's not in j. rueben long, she is because i saw that before i heard it on the news.

need new mayor

Posted by bob ford, bennettsville - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 4:40 p.m.

while i agree the town need a new mayor,it has nothing to do with color or the white house, because white people also helped get Mr. Obama in office.
we're all in this together so those that don't like it may as well suck it up.

I was framed!!!

Posted by E M, Conway - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 3:11 p.m.

Is this going to be her excuse this time too? Maybe she had to go to the bathroom or maybe it was a setup. Oh, I know, her chest hurts again! I wonder what excuse she will use this time? What a disgrace to Atlantic Beach. If this was any other person we would be in jail and staying there. May-be it wasn't her at all!! HUMM!!

Above the Law?

Posted by Michael Patterson, Mullins - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 10:18 a.m.

If she thinks she is above the law ,well then BURN the TAPES! It would be in the best interest of everyone if the state would recend the town charter and let North Myrtle take over. A blind person can see that the town cannot self-govern its self She is a total disgrace to everyone who lives in Atlantic Beach and should join Armstrong and the rest of that crowd in jail or in exile.

A Good Defense

Posted by James F., Bennettsville - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 9:21 a.m.

Well! Chief Justice Jean Toal did it and was not put in jail.

WHAT

Posted by e s, loris - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 9:02 a.m.

WHAT is wrong with this woman? she shoud be released as mayor, she doesnt go to town meetings cause she cant stay out of jail. the little town will never survive with this kind of leadership. might as well cover it up and send flowers

the only one..

Posted by Ann Campbell, SC - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 8:33 a.m.

Guess she was the only African-American running for the office of mayor...We know that most of them vote based on skin color-look at what is in the White House-he's at least half-black even though he is a socialist and is slowly polarizing the country-not to mention destroying the economy for its future citizens.

Again!

Arrogance or ignorance? The Governor will have make a deision once all the facts are in.

Great example

Posted by Robert K, MB - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 2:58 a.m.

This says alot about the people that put her in position. She has consistently been in jail, any other person would be in prison by now on a 3 strikes ruling. I would be ashamed if I was a part of the leadership in this town.

Atlantic Beach Mayor

Posted by J S, Myrtle Beach - Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 12:31 a.m.

Retha looks so good in a orange jumpsuit, she should be required to wear it for a couple years behind bars. The outside world would look a lot better.
