Keeping old phone books and cell phones out of the landfill is the goal of a local telephone company, and students stepped up to the challenge.
The HTC recycling program collected more than 40,000 phone books and 390 cell phones.
Technology prizes like desktop computers, laptops and smartboards will be awarded to the following school winners for 2012.
These schools recycled the largest number of directories:
§ 1st Place ($2,500 value) St. Michael Catholic School (8,572 directories recycled)
§ 2nd Place ($1,000 value) South Conway Elementary (7,289 directories recycled)
§ 3rd Place ($500 value) Myrtle Beach Intermediate (1,629 directories recycled)
These schools recycled the most directories based on the number of students in the school:
§ 1st Place ($2,500 value) Holy Trinity Catholic School (5,416 directories recycled with 43 students)
§ 2nd Place ($1,000 value) Pee Dee Elementary (2,923 directories recycled with 758 students)
§ 3rd Place ($500 value) Daisy Elementary School (1,570 directories recycled with 605 students)
Over the past 14 years, HTC has contributed more than $127,000 to new classroom technology and recycled more than 850,000 phone books.
