Gov. Nikki Haley's campaign has reimbursed taxpayers more than $7,700 for her security during out-of-state fundraising events.

Haley's campaign spokeswoman Marisa Crawford said Wednesday that reimbursement checks were written the same day the campaign received invoices from the State Law Enforcement Division and the Department of Natural Resources.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg previously reported that SLED had spent more than $16,000 through December on security for Haley's private fundraising.

Crawford said in April the campaign would reimburse the state this summer for private security costs during Haley's first 18 months in office. State law bars taxpayer funds from being used for campaign events.

Why the invoices totaled less than $7,740 is unclear.

Representatives for SLED and the campaign told The Associated Press they are gathering information.
