(AP) -- SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina mother has been sentenced to 29 years in prison and a father ordered to spend 25 years behind bars after admitting their 16-month-old son starved to death.

Multiple media outlets report 26-year-old Kevin Isaac and 24-year-old Marketta McCray pleaded guilty on Monday to homicide by child abuse in Sumter County.

Authorities say one of the couple's sons weighed just under 9 pounds when he died last March - less than half the average body weight for a 16-month-old child.

Prosecutors say the victim's twin brother also was severely malnourished, while three of the couple's other children were healthy.

Lawyers for the couple told the judge they don't know why their two youngest children were starved.
