In preparation for more drivers on the road this holiday week, the SC Highway Patrol has stepped up its patrols on area roadways.
The traffic began picking up Wednesday morning, and by mid-afternoon, I-95 in Dillon County was flooded with traffic, though things were moving smoothly.
AAA Carolinas predicts 569,000 South Carolinians will travel more than 50 miles for home over the next few days. That equates to an increase of 2.3 percent over last year.
While more troopers will be on the roads, they are still asking for everyone's help.
"We do ask drivers to do their part. Drive the posted speed limits. Wear your seatbelt. Don't drink and drive and just be extra careful this holiday weekend," said Lance Corporal Sonny Collins.
Collins said troopers will also step up patrols near shopping malls where traffic is expected to be congested later this week and weekend.
