The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce has adopted a new campaign to encourage shoppers to buy locally.

They are introducing "Eco" the starfish. His name has two meanings - eco-friendly and eco-nomical.

Chamber president Marc Jordan says the goal of the campaign is to boost the local economy.

"Whenever you buy local, wherever local is, you're supporting your local community sales taxes and jobs. When you shop the independently owned, it spreads it out a little bit more because those folks are people who actually live here and the money stays here, but we want you to shop local no matter what."

Shoppers are encouraged to pick two independently owned businesses in North Myrtle Beach and spend $50.00 at each business.
