The South Carolina Ethics Commission is taking a closer look at the 24 checks for $1,000 each that were given as campaign contributions to Myrtle Beach City Council members and other local and state lawmakers.
The checks came from individuals and limited liability corporations. Many of them were in the form of cashiers checks, which commission officials say is unusual for campaign contributions. The commission recently sent letters to four city council incumbents, asking for copies of the checks.
Officials say the request is not a formal investigation.
