SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- Sheriff's deputies in South Carolina have charged seven people they say were involved in at a weekend dogfight.

Multiple media outlets reported that more than 20 people were at the Sumter County home when deputies arrived around 1 a.m. Sunday, but many ran into the woods. Authorities seized chains, weapons and medicine for animals at the property.

Six dogs were taken to an animal shelter. Five marijuana plants worth $10,000 were also seized.

The homeowner, 42-year-old Betty Simms, has been charged with dogfighting, animal cruelty and manufacturing marijuana.

Others charged with dogfighting include: 18-year-old Willie Davis, 17-year-old Chedric Jones, 21-year-old Milton Gaymon, 20-year-old Weldon Jackson, 22-year-old Christopher Miller and 23-year-od Tony Mickens.
