WALTERBORO, S.C. (AP) -- Friends and family of the South Carolina sheriff's deputy slain as he responded to a burglary call one year ago are gathering to remember his life.
Multiple media outlets report that a memorial service for Colleton County Deputy Dennis Compton is planned for Thursday at 6 p.m. in Walterboro.
The 39-year-old deputy was shot in the stomach last Aug. 6 as he checked a burglary alarm near Smoaks.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against the two men facing murder and first-degree burglary charges in Compton's death.
Solicitor Duffie Stone says 19-year-old Jacoby Fields and 20-year-old Travis Harris deserve to be executed if they are convicted because they killed a law officer and were committing another felony.
