During one of the worst recessions in years, when many hotels are begging for customers, some Grand Strand hotels are refusing to rent rooms to certain people.

Angela Lee's mother got a brochure in the mail touting the beauty and amenities of several Grand Strand hotels. Angela happened to be planning a beach vacation with her mother and son so she called one of the hotels, Bluewater Resort, to make a reservation.

Everything was fine, she says - until she told them she lives in Conway. "Oh, you're a local. I'm like, yes, I am. Um, I'm sorry, we don't rent to locals. And I'm like, why," explained Angela.

Angela was told the hotel has had a bad experience with locals trashing rooms. Bluewater's manager, David Dozier, declined to speak to us on camera, but told NewsChannel 15 locals who rent rooms tend to hold big parties and disturb other guests.

The director of the Myrtle Beach Hospitality Association, Pauline Levesque, says that's a common complaint from hotel managers.

"Numbers of family members come and therefore their insurance is invalid, they're not registered at the hotel, too many people at the hotel, and then the paying guests, their stay isn't what it should be," she added.

Angela Lee isn't buying it.

"I'm very sure that somebody from New York city or Tennessee even could trash a room just as well as somebody living here in Myrtle Beach," said Lee.

She wonders about all those chamber of commerce ads, inviting people to come to friendly Myrtle Beach.

"We have beautiful places and smiling faces, but not for the people who live here," Lee said.

The manager of the Bluewater apologizes for the mailer that went to someone in Conway. He says that shouldn't have happened.

As for Angela, she has since found a hotel that does rent to locals and we should point out, there are many of them. She says they're planning on having a lot of fun at the beach.

The hospitality association has made up a list of hotels that will rent to locals. You can find that link below.

I owned a condominium in Myrtle Beach at the Meridian Plaza since 1984, and recently sold it in
2007. Well, last year I thought I would stay there for the night just to get away from Conway for one night and guess what? THEY WOULD NOT RENT TO ME! I was flabberghasted! TO SAY THE LEAST! Things need to change, be careful what you wish for Myrtle Beach!

Let's have a beer!

Gee, this kind of sounds like profiling to me. Maybe we should all go to the White House and have a beer to discuss this.

Not all places....

This view is not shared by all hotels. I work at the desk at a hotel who rents to locals regularly. The location is the HAMPTON INN at BROADWAY at the BEACH. While not physically on the beach, it still is a nice property to get away. We welcome everyone who wishes to stay so long as we have the rooms available. We look forward to seeing you! Incidentally these policies are bogus anyway with the eviction laws in this state it would not take much to get rid of a problem room if they are distubing other guests. It seems that people just don't want to be bothered with it and just generalizes all locals into the same pot. Not right at all.

Give me my money back .

We need to go to Columbia with this . Our tax money pays to promote these places . We need to take back the beach . Elect officials who will fight to place laws against this . We should get first pick and treated the best . I've always wanted to spend a week at the beach but now I have to go to a list to see where I'm accepted . I'm telling you we need to put out a list of those who don't take locals and blast them all over the media , local and national . Everyone out there write down your experiences with this and where and take it to the Chamber of Commerce and tell them to quit taken our money to line thioer pockets . I believe Brad Dean makes about $125,000 now go make him earn it .

No locals allowed in MB rentals

Posted by m greathouse, mb - Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

This has been a long time policy of many MB hotels as we had found out over 10 years ago.
I remember when we were first turned down I was absolutely amazed that they would or even legaly assume that I was a hazard to their establishment because I live nearby.
Heck they already get your credit card information but I guess if one accidently breaks a lamp that is connected to the headboard thats connected to the bed I would say locals are trashing on purpose (I'm rolling my eyes)meanwhile I guess that lamp that should have been glued or screwed down in the first place being made in some third world country gained alot in value since the 1970's.
But all in all that is stupidious but not yet being a word the policy is as bright as a burned out lightbulb.
There are a number of motels and hotels that do not share that policy.
But these people fail to realize that many couples simply need a short change of scenary while their kids are in the care of their grandparents during a summer weekend.
Or some other celebration, but I beleive like other posters have stated don't think there is any legal standing that would cause them to refuse or deny service based upon the place of residence I can understand an age requirement(even having a deposit for all visitors equally).
But you know this also reminds me of how many "Adult Living" communities have the same policies about people based upon their age not being allowed to rent their properties or to even buy in that community, not that I would want to but I have elderly parents and in the event something happened to them the property would have to be sold to older people thus reducing possible buyers or wait until I get old enough to qualify for senior status,it's all bologna long destroyed is our Constitutional Republic such fools wev'e become very sad.....

NO DIFFERENT THAN SOME OF THE ORDINANCES

Posted by NIGHTSHIFT THEORGINAL, THE EAST COAST - Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 3:05 a.m.

Ok let me just point out that the tourist from out of town have no idea of all the changes in Myrtle Beach. They do not any about the selective tourism that goes on or about the prejudicial generalization and judgments that have been made by small minded hateful people towards certain groups of tourist. Even in reading some of these comments some one give the idea that they think all locals just want to party or commit adultery and that they are dirty, live in dirty homes, leave trash behind and will damage the property. But the tourist do not no how Myrtle Beach people think or how they treats people. They do not know about all the new parking meters, ordinances, traffic road blocks and citations. They do not know about the out of control crime. They do not know about the boycott or the reasoning behind it.
But as locals we do know about all of this. So why in the world would any of you want to spend any money in such a hateful and cursed town? Do you not care about what your hard earned dollars are supporting? You see the all mighty dollar is the only language that these businesses and politicians understand. If we all spoke loudly, together and supported the boycott then things would change quite quickly.

It is hard to believe that all locals trash hotel rooms just like all bikers are supposed to be depraved outlaws!

Its amazing to me at our local Christmas Party I can use the same credit card with a discount. There is drinking and partying yet no damage has ever happened.I just like the sound of the ocean.Maybe they should shut the beach down senior week or year round if people are going to relax and have fun.I supported the motels during bike week but they can go take a flying leap.

There are many, many locals that would love to OWN a SECOND home on the beach, but WE locals don't make that kind of money working at the beach. So you will have excuse US LOCALS if don't get any sympathy from US.

I am a local that has on two occasions needed to rent a local hotel room for family coming to visit. I was told that they do not rent to locals and when I explained that I would not be staying in the room I was still charged a $275 deposit. I did not want my family to have to pay for the room, so I paid the deposit. It's so sad that Myrtle Beach is this way

Unbelievable

Posted by Jenn Fine, Conway - Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 10:58 a.m.

I worked in the resort and hotel business and more non locals than locals trashed rooms....... MB friendly, I do not think so...... There are nice places on the south end, with much more hospitality and beautiful views, they will be more than happy to accomodate....

Don't Need It!

Between the traffic, high prices and now local discrimination in Myrtle Beach hotels, I'm finding there's lot's of other hotels/motels/restaurants further south and further north along the coast.

Who needs Myrtle Beach anyway? Not me....plenty of beaches and hotels/motels/restaurants elsewhere, just as plush and a lot cheaper....anywhere from Little River to Hilton Head.

By the way? Don't they carry insurance?

Well folks there is a boycott going on and if they don't want our money then we can take it elese where. The ones who so call trash the rooms are the high school kids and the college kids and they what to blame the ones who didn't do it this is call demiscration.By brother didn't come down here this year he went to Florida and got a better deal on hotel rooms and even got tickets to waldisensy world and they had the best time of their lives. There are great deals out in other like Tennese.Like DollyWood, she has a deal like park and dinner ticket all in one.Just go on the enternet and look for them.Since they are calling us trashy well for your sake I hope you don't make it in busness.I'm telling my friends and family not to come here and for the reason of this is how they treat us.They want us to pay high taxes and keep their busness in float. And to get the record straight when I go stay in a hotel I do clean after my self and my kid.I even bring my own garabage bag so the pizza box can fit in it.I even make my own bed so there. But don't worry I can get better deals eles where.I'm sorry that they are like this but like I was taught if they don't want you then theres more fish out there who would love to have your money.

Local discrimination

Posted by John Kerns, Surfside Beach - Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 6:21 a.m.

I feel so sorry for you (local) people. You are as in your words being dicriminated against. Well it's about time. I have owned a home in the Myrtle Beach area for over 20 years. The key word is OWN, not an investment property used as a rental.

During this time I have paid higher taxes, paid over twice the amount locals pay to play golf, higher prices in many resturants etc.If I sell my home to buy a new one I pay more in real estate fees. All of this because I do not live here on a permanent basis. This is but a few of the things I endure because I want a place of my own at the beach. I also live here several months of the year.

If you want sympathy look in the dictionary because you will not find it with me and I am sure it will not be found with others like myself.

If we get taxed to pay to advertise the hotels we should get to stay in them

Posted by J Maples, Myrtle Beach - Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 5:57 a.m.

If we cannot stay at these hotels then Myrtle Beach should not be able to raise our taxes to promote tourism for these hotels.

zip code discrimination

Posted by scott furr, lexington, nc - Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 2:49 a.m.

I wish I would have had the grades to get into law school. With all of the recent happenings in the myrtle beach/horry county area, an intelligent young civil rights attorney could really make a name for himself (as well as a nice living) based solely on cases in this area. I just don't understand how in one area the local government agencies, along with businesses can continually get away violating the rights of people where there have been many court cases over the years that provide precedent. In this instance, I believe that you could apply previous court rulings pertaining to discrimination by credit card providers charging higher fees to clients that lived in less desirable zip codes.

This Isn't Right...

Posted by Crysta Kundick, Carolina Forest-Myrtle Beach - Monday, July 27, 2009 at 11:19 p.m.

Not letting any locals stay in a hotel room is not the way to be. I can understand not letting teenagers/college age kids not being able to check out a room because I'm sure they are not there for the ocean view. However, if a local family has relatives in town, there should be no problem about checking out a suite of some sort, and let everyone stay there for a week, or just a long weekend. Myrtle Beach businesses really need to think things out before they follow through their own rules.

I dont agree with not renting to locals!!

Posted by lashonda perry, myrtle beach - Monday, July 27, 2009 at 11:08 p.m.

I don't think that it is fair not to rent to locals. I was recentley married and i couldn't afford to take a honeymoon, so i wanted to go to a really nice hotel and was told no because i was a local!!! I do think it is discrimnation. not all locals trash rooms!!

Another Denied

Posted by D. L>, Conway - Monday, July 27, 2009 at 10:16 p.m.

Guess what? Here is another story about being denied. I wanted to surprise my wife with a weekend away for Valentines Day this past Feb. I had planned a nice weekend for us both during the off season. I went to the LANDMARK RESORT. That was the a HUGE mistake. I had stayed at the LANDMARK a half a dozen times over the last year. But this time they said they dont rent to locals and that if they did rent to us they would charge us 5 times the daily rate for a deposit. This is all depending on who checks you in I guess because not all of their employees practice the same policy. I asked to speak to the manager and he said they have multiple hotels and they all have the same policy. I checked one of their SISTER hotels and they said they did rent to locals but would charge a deposit for the room and would also be 5 times the daily rate. I called another one of their hotels and they rented to locals and didnt require a deposit. I even went so far as to call the General Manager and he said he was sorry but that was their policy and didnt care if we stayed or not. Well guess what. I work for an airline at the Myrtle Beach international Airport as well as handle the private aircraft coming into the area. Guess what the passengers do when they step off the plane and ask about local hotels? I WILL NOT RECOMMEND ANY OF THESE HOTELS. The Crown Reef was very generous in renting my wife and I a room for the weekend and invited us back with open arms. I commend the Crown Reef and their employees for their EXTRAORDINARY customer service and (get this Myrtle Beach) HOSPITALITY. I have personally made it a point to let every employee at the airport, including all the airlines, cabs, skycaps and rental car agents to know about my experience at the LANDMARK TOURIST RESORT and to put them and their other hotels on their BLACK LIST. If we continue to do this, they will have to find someone else to cater to.. LOCALS UNITE AND STAND UP FOR WHAT WE KNOW TO BE THE RIGHT THING TO DO. THIS WAS OUR BEACH IN THE BEGINNING.

Stupid and discriminatory...

Posted by D I, Myrtle Beach - Monday, July 27, 2009 at 10:03 p.m.

"All locals are doing are moving in to a place that is cleaner then they currently reside. I work at the desk of a resort and it amazes me the trash locals leave behind... I agree all hotels should stand by this policy. Most of the locals are running from there better haves..."

That is such a horrible generalization. I am very clean and courteous when I stay somewhere and I have stayed in the same town that I live in. I stay at hotels for comfort...not to get away from my BETTER HALF. I hope something is done because this is ridiculous.

This is nothing new!

Posted by J. Thomas, Myrtle Beach - Monday, July 27, 2009 at 9:17 p.m.

Myrtle Beach has been like this for years. Last year I has some water damage in my home and went to over 10 local hotels. Everything was fine until I showed my local ID. Then I got all kinds of excuses for why they couldn't rent a room to me. Maybe now since its in the news they will change there polices. I live a block from the beach and I still like to get an ocean front room sometimes to enjoy the view.

A local homeowners money is NO good

I own a small condo in Myrtle Beach and rather then crowd my 2 adult children when they came to visit, I tried to rent a room for them for one week. They are from the Buffalo, NY area and had never seen the ocean. I tried to rent a room for a week as a surprise for them, NO one I contacted would rent a room to me for them when they found out I was a local. I stated I would put a deposit and be responsible.( Even if they did trash the room, a local would be easy to hold responsible then someone from out of state). I can NOT believe that only 15 places are on the list. This is discrimination big time

i agree

No locals in our hotels!

Hey don't feel bad.. a few years ago I tried booking a local hotel for a getaway for my husband and myself and got the same response..we don't rent to locals..and that was in Florence. I asked the hotel manager what if we had a house fire and she told me we would need proof form the fire dept. Needless to say I told her to stick it. Oh and the chain.. Holiday Inn. Can you say..no more Holiday Inn for me.

Nothing New...

Posted by Christie Chestnut, Myrtle Beach - Monday, July 27, 2009 at 8:16 p.m.

While I don't agree with any of the politicians' views that are running our city right now..I *do* have to admit that this practice is not uncommon and has been the case for many years.

I sold a house back in 1998. The closing on my new house was postponed by about a week. So b/c of that...I had to find a place to stay since I had already closed on the one I sold.

I was taken back by how many hotels turned me away because I was local.

It's unbelievable that 11 years later...they continue to get away with this discrimination (as I see it).

Sad...very sad!!!!!!!!!

Discrimination

Posted by jennie mccarthy, myrtle beach - Monday, July 27, 2009 at 7:28 p.m.

Last fall I reserved a room at the Sand Castle the wkend before major surgery to get away with my husband. I had made the arrangements on Priceline. When I went to ck in they informed me that they don't rent to locals. Since Priceline has a 24 cancellation policy, not only did I not get my room, I was not refunded my money. I was so angry I wanted to spend the night in the hotel lobby, but my husband was afraid we would be arrested for disorderly conduct. So we left, but this really left a bad taste in my mouth for MB hotels. This is discrimination based on where you live and I think eventually these hotels and maybe the city of MB will be sued over this policy.

My wife and I are both near our fiftys. We live just blocks from the beach but we still love staying ocean front listening and watching the waves a couple times a year.I have known and worked with people who did rent rooms just to have parties but to put everyone in the same catorgory is just as stupid as other prejudices.MB is in a sad state. The same motels will rent by the week to crackheads in the winter as long as they have someone paying.
