COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- "Why all the big cover-up?"  That's what one state senator in South Carolina wants to know.

With state leaders wondering where in the world Gov. Mark Sanford was after hearing nothing from him since last Thursday, the governor's aides yesterday said he had been hiking the Appalachian trail to clear his head after a bruising legislative session.

But today, the Republican governor tells The State newspaper that he'd decided to go to Argentina instead, because he wanted to do something exotic. The paper reported that Sanford arrived in Atlanta on a flight from Buenos Aires this morning.

Sanford tells The State he was alone on the trip, but declined to give any details other than to say he drove along the coastline.

The news prompted state Sen. Jake Knotts, a fellow Republican, to complain: "Lies. Lies. Lies." He says "that's all we ever get" from the governor and his staff.

Neither the governor nor his spokesman has commented on the criticism.

Argentina

It's one thing to go on a get away to clear you head or just get away for some much needed rest but to go meet the other woman and on fathers day really tells us something. If he doesn't care about his family what makes you think he cares about the citizens.Do you think he's still a GOOD OLE BOY if you do then somethings wrong with you. His priorities are not in order. If you are going to live in a glass house don't throw stones.

So what, he's back!

I think Mr. Sanford should be ashamed of himself. There is absolutely no excuse for his actions. If his wife knew about this 5 months ago, she should have exposed him. Why? Well, he doesn't seem to care about her or their kids. He should leave South Carolina all together and go back to Argentina with his so called sidekick. Mrs. Sanford, just hold your head up and think about it, you're better off without him. I hope you are considering DIVORCE! I felt he didn't care about the citizens but this is just insane.

If you can't take the heat....

They say that you need to get out of the kitchen. Cooking up decisions that will affect all South Carolinians, then having a wise, bipartisan legislative body take that concoction of the burner, put it in the trashcan, and have our courts uphold their decision made the Governor run off to lick his self inflicted wounds. Irresponsible, with gross failure to say he’s wrong. Sanford needs to get out of the kitchen. Actually Sanford needs to get out of the house; as well as out of the senate. Please leave the decision and policy making up to those elected officials who fought your refusal of our part of the stimulus. They realize that their constituents will make the best use of those funds, work to restore prosperity, and foster equality and opportunity for all South Carolinians. They also are the type individuals that would never vanish because they didn’t get their way; you see these public servants would be out there improvising, listening to people, and doing their part.

Taking Back At Attention

Posted by James F., Bennettsville - Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 11:15 a.m.

I am taking back at all the attention our legislature and those who are really in control do not get in South Carolina. We have legislators that represent other legislators against the state and get huge rewards for them and the rest of us never hear about them. We have legislators that represent friends, relatives and aquaintances against the state and get huge settlements from WC you never hear about. We have legislators that appoint good old boy and girl donors as pay back to lush government jobs.We have a US Legislature that donates millions to a corrupt organization called akorn. We even have a President that refuses to show his real birth certificate and the National Press is after Sanford,B/S. You hear rumors of state legislators cruising Interstate rest stops and never hear about it. Their is a strong rumor one of the states ex-solicitors is being investigated over misdirected money and it is all hush, hush. Seems like if you are a good old boy or belong to the Fraternal Order you can do as you please but if you go against the wishes of the real crooks and perverts the press will hound you to death.America is a sick decaying nation and we no longer have impatriality we have those with agendas that care only for self.

Mark Sanford's Excellent Adventure

What worries me is that Gov. Sanford sees nothing wrong with just taking off and telling no one where he went. I am all for him to take a vacation for a few days with or without his family. He chose to run for Governor....he was elected into office...with that comes the responsibility of running the state. If you or I took off without calling in to our employer for three days or more it would be considered job abandoment and we would be subject to immediate termination.
Again, I have no problem with Mr. Sanford wanting some time alone.....but,if Mr. Sanford cannot handle the pressures of being Governor...then perhaps his political career should end now.

Taken aback?

The governor was "was taken aback by the attention" that his unexplained absence was getting? Are you kidding Governor? You CANNOT be serious by this statement. I can't wait to see what Sawyer has to say next after cleaning all the egg off his face. A hiking trip. It sounded good. I can understand someone needing to just get away and be left alone for a while after all the stress but to not tell even your wife? Argentina? WOW! There's more to this story and unfortunately the more naive the governor tries to ACT the more attention this is going to get. I PREDICT that before this is over the Governor becomes tabloid fodder for yet another politician's stupidity an/or indiscretions. What were you thinking? I don't think that the idiscretions and misbehaviors of politicians, lately, appal the voters as much as its the way the politician spins it in a way that treats US like idiots and little children with their assinine explanations. Unfortunately Governor you may find yourself on another mysterious and unexplained absence only this time from the election results and not by your choice but the voters.
