NewsChannel 15 has learned more than a dozen people fell ill with gastrointestinal problems after attending a barbeque dinner honoring Rep. Henry Brown.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control confirms at least eleven "similar" cases among people who ate at this past Thursday's event, though NewsChannel 15 has received higher reports.

Thom Berry with DHEC said the main symptom is diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems. Berry added that health regulators are looking into the cases.

Berry said the virus appears to be mild, and he said no one has been hospitalized. The department is working to gather stool samples to find out what sort of illness it may be.

Berry said there are two options -- the first being a norovirus which is a highly contagious, but usually mild, stomach bug. The second option, according to Berry, is that the illness may have come from the food.

NewsChannel 15 has been unable to confirm who catered the event, but a source says it's a company from Conway that may not have had the proper catering licenses and/or permits.

DHEC said it's not necessary for people to contact their offices. Health officials said they just wanted people to be aware of the problem.

The event was held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and was a thank you party given in honor of Congressman Henry Brown. Brown did not sponsor the event, and it wasn't entirely clear who all sponsored it.

A spokesman for Brown says state Representative Tracy Edge was instrumental in planning the event, and Brad Dean with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce says the chamber in part sponsored the dinner.

We'll post more information as it becomes available.

The food served that night at the convention center was not provided by the convention center. It was brought in by the event organizers from an outside source. The name of that source has not been released. We will continue to follow up on this story with the state health officials.

I attented the event, and I became sick on that very same day until friday afternoon. I blamed it on the wine I had afterwards but i found out many people suffered same sympomts from that nasty food they served at Convention Center...the food was disgusting, but I only had couple of bites because I was hungry...I have never been that sick in my life.

Good old boy polictics

I feel sorry for the people that got sick. I think the main story here is how did an unlicensed caterer get the job?

There are lots of food service business in MB complaining about the lost revenue from bikers. The committe had the nerve to hire someone unlicensed. What recourse do the ill people have? That is why business have to pay libility insurance.

Or is this another case of good old boy polictics, hire a friend of a friend. This is equal to the White House using illegals to care for the White House lawn.

They don't know who catered it???

Not knowing who catered the party is a croc! Someone there must have known who catered the party... Someone must have hired the group if the Convention Center didn't provide the food. If this was at a restaurant or something, they would have been practically closing it's doors and putting them out of business. This story deffinitely needs a follow up and an update to make sure the public knows whats going on...
