Atlantic Beach Mayor Retha Pierce was supposed to have her hit and run case heard by a grand jury Thursday, but that didn't happen.

Pierce was arrested and charged with hit and run a couple of months ago. The 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office tells NewsChannel 15 that Pierce's case was not heard because she has not had her initial appearance yet, and because they have not received a letter of representation from any attorneys on behalf of Pierce.

Atlantic Beach police say Pierce was pulling across three lanes of traffic, hit another car and then drove off. Pierce contends it was the other car that left.

If indicted, the governor says he'll most likely suspend the mayor pending the case's outcome.

We're told her initial appearance will be Friday afternoon at one.

Grand Jury on Pierce

Posted by James F., Bennettsville - Friday, May 29, 2009 at 8:51 a.m.

I am not an attorney and I know that laws change so I have a question. From what I have read and heard on the news there were no injuries in this accident and no major damage so I think this is a minor misdeameanor so why should it go before a Grand Jury? Of course I know a Grand Jury can even be convened to indict a ham sandwich. From everything I have read on this lady she probably should not be the mayor but I assure you people sitting in higher places than her have done worse and no Grand Jury was called. This seems like nothing more than politics as usual and a waste of tax payer money. Our esteemed SC Supreme Court Chief Justice left the scene of an accident twice and from accounts in one case she had been drinking and there was no Grand Jury impaneled for her and she was not suspended. As a matter of fact she was reappointed back to the job unnanimously by our state legislature.Come on folks, lets get real here.

Well she's all you'd ever want,
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner.
Well she always knows her place.
She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner.
She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady.
