A former Lake City police officer will spend 20 years in prison for conspiring with drug dealers to keep them from getting busted.

Shanita McKnight was very emotional and sobbed very loudly at times. She begged the judge to have mercy on her, saying she needed to get home to her young daughter and son.

McKnight's family and friends gathered outside the courthouse following her sentence. They could barely contain their emotions.

"This has been a hard pill to swallow today," said Eric Daniels, a close friend.

"Obviously we've disappointed today with the sentencing but we all believe in her," said Peggy Sells, McKnight's former coach.

Wednesday morning, a judge gave the former lake city police officer 20 years for drug conspiracy and extortion. In October, a federal jury convicted McKnight for tipping off drug dealers in lake city so they wouldn't get caught.

Sheriff Kenney Boone said, "You had a police officer who took an oath to enforce the laws of the state and use that oath and their position against justice, and we feel like justice has been served."

McKnight's family says justice won't be served until she's released from prison. They plan to urge mcknight to appeal her 20 year prison sentence.

Eight people spoke to the judge during the sentencing hearing saying McKnight was a good officer, who cared about Lake City.

When released from federal prison, McKnight will be on supervised release for five years.

I just hope that the good people of Lake City will look beyond Mrs. McKnight's arrest and band together to help her children. They are the victims in this situation.

Why do poeple think everything is

OK why is it that stupid people have to always bring up race? It is not about the color of a persons skin it is about RIGHT OR WRONG!!!! When you do wrong then you have to pay the punishment. She did wrong and she should pay for what she did. Why do we have to make everything a racial issues? Take a look into the United States Armed Forces. What color people are fighting for you to keep the freedom you have. The last time I checked they were all races not just one. So therefore all races should be treated EQUAL. If she were a white and not black we would not have even heard anything mentioned about race SO TELL ME NOW WHO IS THE RACIAL ONE!!!! Get over what color GOD made you and be happy for who you are and the freedom you have.

Life is what you make it. Mike Vick is the worse yet white people been fighting chickens, dogs for years. That girl aint do nothing strange to those crooked politicians, Regan-Iran Contra.. Nixon- Watergate and how about BTK Killer. That girl dont need 20 years to rehabilitate. She needs to be punished but come on. Child molesters get less. Mandatory minimum?? ZLook at this 5 grams of crack equivalent to a kilo of powder cocaine??? Get real this black/white stuff gota stop. They knew crack was more prevalent in the hoods, but you can have a kilo in Hollywood partying it up. Rush Limbaugh said publically he wants the President to fail..And has anyone every seen so much of Dick Cheney talking on TV. I guess Barry Bonds is the only guy unworthy of Hall of Fame honors someday. I bet he will be the last if Mark , Roger and others are considered. Lastly when does a man get 15 years for going to retrieve his own stuff that was stolen. If we were so into the law, the guy who had the gun should be in jail, not OJ.. Its so transparent how society sets double standards. Maybe she should have been on the Rodney King scene or in that precient bathroom ramming broom handles up that guys anus. I bet no one received 20 years in all that I've mentioned.GOD Bless America

Justice for Lake City

The 8 people that spoke and said that Shanita CARED about Lake City came out and told a lie. If she really had cared about Lake City and the people in the town then she would have done everything in her power to keep drugs off the street. But did she do this, NO she turned a blind eye and took money to stay quiet. If you ask me she should have gotten life. Is she cared so much for her young kids and really wanted to be home wtih them then she would have never done these things. She did them thinking she would not get caught because she was a police officer. TO MY A POLICE OFFICER SHOULD BE HONEST AND UPHOLD THE LAW NOT HELP TO KEEP WRONG DOINGS HIDDEN. If you ask my opinion, there needs to be a lot digging into the doings of the police dept in Lake City and I bet a lot more police officers will be right where Shanita is at. SHE GOT LESS THAN SHE DESERVES.....SHE NEEDS TO SPEND THE REST OF HER LIFE IN PRISON!!!!
