COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina treasurer's office says 21 small towns stand to lose between $775 and more than $24,500 quarterly for not turning in their audits.
Municipalities and counties must send the treasurer's office their annual audits. A measure approved by the Legislature last year allows Treasurer Converse Chellis to withhold quarterly payments if audits are not submitted.
The office has posted on its Web site the names of 21 small towns not complying. Spokesman Scott Malyerck said Tuesday they must turn in their 2007 audits by April to receive their quarterly check as scheduled.
The listed towns range in size from 95 residents to 3,100. Municipal Association spokeswoman Reba Campbell notes 93 percent of South Carolina's cities are in compliance.
