What's the harm

Posted by MRS ANONYMOUS, conway - Tuesday, February 03, 2009 at 5:04 p.m.

So a few old croonies get a plate that labels them something they aren't? They can't take that plate in somewhere and recieve anything special, can they? They can't use the special plate as proof and request respect, right? How many teachers get questioned when they want a special plate? Who questions the person that has a CCU alumni sticker on their car? If it is so important to get a tag that has that label they are willing to forge the documents, what's to stop them from taking forged documents into the DMV, or anywhere else for that matter? It really only is a label to signify something they have achieved. The type of people that are going to lie about who they really are, are sometimes delusional. Let's not spend so much energy and time worrying about them.

Documents Easily Created

It is very easy to create documents to assert a military medal. I don't think it is a good idea to have a mail-in application when it relates to military plates. This should be a walk-in with picture ID and a thumb print with photograph along with a signed statement under oath that the documents presented are true and correct in person. Otherwise everything becomes murky and subject to interpretation.

Ripe for Abuse

Unless the state intends to VERIFY eligibility - this will become a nest of snakes with frauds and phonies using forged documents to get plates. That has already been seen across the country and was the focus of a Chicago Tribune expose last fall. We need to have a PUBLIC LIST of eligibility (H.R. 666) to avoid the problems this poses.
