CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers is discussing plans to deepen the Charleston Harbor shipping channel.
The so-called scoping meeting is being held Tuesday evening at The Citadel in Charleston.
It's a chance for the public to learn about the process for studying the project. Officials from the corps will be on hand to discuss economics, engineering and environmental aspects of then study.
The study is to determine if deepening the shipping channel beyond its current 45 feet is economically beneficial and does not harm the environment.
The study is expected to cost $20 million and the deepening project itself another $300 million.
Maritime interests say a deeper channel is needed to handle larger ships that will call once the Panama Canal is widened.
