ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) - Once a month, North Strand Helping Hand provides groceries to people in need in Atlantic Beach. Saturday, volunteers stood ready with tickets to feed 200 people, but after an hour not even half of those tickets had been given out.

North Strand Helping Hand Director Margaret Owens says the lack of attendance doesn't reflect the need in Horry County. "People are still hungry in Horry County. Statistics show that one out of four kids in Horry County go hungry."

Clients know those statistics all too well.

"Well right now, it's really hard to find work," says Michelle Teal.

Teal says she uses the services not only to feed her family, but to fill her heart as well.

"Everybody falls on hard times," says Teal, "It's just nice to have somebody that will help pick you up."

Those 'pick-me-ups' seem to start when volunteers greet clients with a hug and a smile.

Volunteer Sharon Kowalski says, "Hugs are love. I want them to know how much I love them."

Volunteers then lead clients through the individual grocery stations.

They push the carts and let the clients pick which items they would like to take.

Volunteer Sondra Hutchins says this service gives clients a new sense of freedom.

"When people are allowed to choose what they like instead of being given things, I see it makes a big difference and puts a big smile on our clients' faces. The ability to choose whether it's cream of mushroom soup or vegetable soup, that's a big deal."

The organization says they are need of monetary donations.
