They are rare, but they are possible. The website geology.com says part of the reason for this low incidence of tsunamis is the lack of subduction zones - the most common source of tsunami-causing earthquakes.

A tsunami is a series of seismic sea waves produced by some kind of displacement of the sea floor, usually occuring in an earthquake zone. Experts say conditions in the Pacific Ocean make it prime for the weather event, but there are also features in the Atlantic Ocean that could produce a tsunami on the East Coast.
